Why don’t women take control of their own finances?

That’s the question being asked by stock market training company ILTB (Invest Like The Best). “We run regular workshops and seminars around the country,” says Susan Hayes, Support and Development Manager, ILTB. “We get a lot of interest from both men and women, but only about ten per cent of the people at our seminars are women.”

However, there has been a striking increase in the number of Irish women entrepreneurs. A recent Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report showed that last year the figure for women running businesses had increased to 5.9 per cent from 4.2 per cent in 2006. GEM said this percentage was much higher than the average in the EU and OECD countries.

ISME calls for public sector wage and recruitment freeze

ISME, the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association, has called on the Government to immediately introduce a pay and recruitment freeze in the public sector in order to control government expenditure, which is already running in excess of budget. The association warned that unless immediate action is taken the cost of running the public sector would result in significant exchequer deficits, with increased borrowings, taxation or both. This scenario would have devastating consequences for an economy which is already on its knees, the association has explained.

Irish businesses were last evening coming to terms with the effects of strict new regulations governing the sale and possession of alcohol, which aim to curb public disorder and eliminate underage drinking.

Under the provisions of the Intoxicating Liquor Act 2008, which came into effect yesterday, off-licences must close at 10pm and gardaí can seize drink from minors.

The RSA is inviting the public to submit their views on a consultation document regarding the use of agricultural and works vehicles on public roads. It is also seeking the input of individuals, companies, organisations and associations involved in the use, sale and hire of agricultural vehicles and works machinery.
