Mayo restaurants shortlisted for quality awards

Four Mayo restaurants have just been nominated for food and wine awards in the annual Food & Wine Magazine Restaurant of the Year awards, sponsored this year by Penfolds Wines. The restaurants in the shortlist are Ashford Castle, Cong; the Ice House, Ballina; La Fougere, Knockranny House Hotel, Westport; and the Salt Restaurant, Lisloughrey Lodge, Cong.

Mayo hoteliers welcome new group

Mayo hoteliers this week welcomed the setting up by Minister Mary Hanafin of an industry wide group to oversee and drive actions on measures to support tourism in Ireland. Fergal Ryan, Chairman of the Mayo branch of Irish Hotels Federation (IHF), stated that tourism must remain to the fore of Government policy and decision making if Ireland’s largest indigenous industry is to play its full role in the recovery of the Irish economy. In particular, Mr Ryan welcomed the commitment shown by Minister Hanafin in chairing the renewal implementation group and the Government’s acknowledgement of the importance of maintaining investment in overseas marketing. He also congratulated local hotelier John Raftery, chairman of the IHF Marketing Committee and proprietor of the Downhill Inn Hotel, Ballina, on his appointment to the Group.

Analogue television to be switched off by 2012

Communications Minister Eamon Ryan has announced plans for the transition from analogue to digital television in Ireland, with analogue television to be switched off by the end of 2012. RTÉ will build a €70 million replacement digital service, which is expected to provide full national coverage and will also provide significant coverage throughout Northern Ireland.

Chambers of commerce urge ‘speedy implementation’ of local government reform

Proposed government reform to do away with local government structures and jobs in a bid to save more than €500 million has been roundly welcomed by representatives for the business community who are snapping up the suggestion and using it as ammunition to call for reduced rates and charges.

Hilary Haydon, chair of Chambers Ireland’s Ratepayers and Local Government Policy Council, said that local government savings must be passed back to business.
