The invasion of the daddy longlegs

Daddy longlegs or craneflies are appearing in their thousands at the moment and they seem to find their way into just about everywhere, they're inside and outside the house and more importantly for the garden, they are dancing all over the lawn, mating and laying their eggs. The resulting larvae are known as leatherjackets and they will hatch two to three weeks later.

They are 30 to 40mm in length when they are fully grown and once hatched they start feasting on the grass roots and stem bases leaving the lawn in an unsightly and weak condition and they can continue to do their damage right through to next June.

The devastation caused by these pests doesn't become immediately obvious but in the spring the first visible signs can be seen when straw coloured patches of turf appear which will later become brown or even bare. Another good indication that there may be leatherjackets present is birds regularly feeding on the lawn, pecking at the ground and digging for the grubs or there may be areas of moss where there is little or no grass present at all.

Fortunately Greenhand Lawn Treatments has the solution, just one quick application of a pesticide spray in the autumn or spring will rid the lawn of leatherjackets and allow your grass to continue to grow strongly and healthily.
