Duathlon  to bring big number to Ballinrobe this month

Anyone who likes running and cycling is in for a treat on Saturday February 16 when Ballinrobe town hosts its third annual duathlon  event.

The last few years has seen an ever increasing number of people taking to the road and trails for biking and running. Local bike shop Marrey Bikes will sponsor the event and is looking for as many locals as possible to take part.

The event is quite short, starting with a 4k run/walk starting in Abbey Street with a run down Bridge Street to Creagh Road and around the beautiful Bowers walk, and back to Abbey St via the Old Weir and Brewery court, where participants collect their bikes at the transition area, then off they go on the 20k cycle out the Claremorris road taking a left for Robeen and left again at Robeen coming home via the Clongowla Road to Abbey Street. The final run is the reverse of the first with the finish at Abbey St. Total distance is 28k.

The event is open to everyone of any fitness level, all you need is a desire to finish. Sign on at Marrey Bikes, Watson’s Lane, Ballinrobe, from 7.30am to 9am on Saturday February 16. Start time at Abbey St is at 10am sharp, finish time approx at 12 noon. Harlequin Adventure Duathlon coming up again

The Harlequin Adventure Duathlon will be held on Saturday March 23 with a start time of 9am. This race is a mix of running, cycling, and mountain running, across some stunning and challenging terrain in Castlebar. The event is using the picturesque Lough Lannagh for the first run section, the undulating/hilly roads of Rathbawn for the second cycling section, and the tortuous hill run up to the booster station in Glenisland that overlooks Castlebar. The views from the booster station are spectacular, Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick, Clare Island, Castlebar town, and Lough Mask are among the views, as these can all be seen on the descent to collect the bike for the final 15k cycle back to Castlebar via Glenisland. To finish off the race competitors have a 3k dash back to the line outside the Harlequin hotel for a total distance of 36km. This event is open to all abilities with the fastest expected to cross the finish line at around 11am in a time under two hours.

This event is being supported by the local Gardai, Civil Defence, Mayo County Council and Town Council. Numbers are filling fast with a limit of 250 entries only allowed.
