Jail for man who has four drink driving convictions in two years

A 27-year-old Crossmolina man was disqualified from driving and sentenced to three months in prison this week, after he was convicted of drink driving for the fourth time in less than two years.

On January 22 at 9.09pm, Sean Gaughan, Ballyscanlon, Crossmolina, was observed by gardaí to take off at speed, which caused the cars wheels to spin and create smoke. Gaughan was followed from the centre of Ballina, where he was observed to pass by a van on the hatch markings. The defendant reached speeds of 140km and eventually Gaughan was stopped at Coolcran, Ballina. He failed a roadside breath test and later gave a breath sample which showed 42mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

The apprentice refrigeration technician and qualified cabinet maker, told the court that he has an alcohol addiction which he is addressing.

At Ballina District Court this week Judge Mary Devins said that the defendant has shown “a certain attitude to the law” and she convicted and fined him €1,000, disqualified him from driving for five years, and sentenced him to three months in prison.
