Castlebar man in possession of drugs threatened court witness, hearing told

Judge Mary Devins adjourned her sentencing of a Castlebar man who pleaded guilty to possession of drugs and to engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour towards a witness in a case where he previously was convicted and sentenced to prison.

David O’Brien, Windsor, Castlebar was stopped by Garda Russell Gibbons on November 4 at 4.05pm on Main Street, Castlebar and searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Gda Gibbons found a quantity of cannabis which had a value of €21 which O’Brien admitted was his, for his own use.

The court was also told by Gda Ray Guilfoyle that on November 27 2008 a report was made to Gardaí by Mr Kenneth Sweeney that he was parked at Mulroy’s filling station beside the N5 roundabout and that O’Brien had walked up to his car and started calling him ‘a wanker’ and blowing kisses at him.

O’Brien admitted to the court that he did call Mr Sweeney ‘a wanker’ once but continued on his way into the shop and he was just walking past his car and saw Sweeney smiling at him. Judge Devins adjourned sentencing on O’Brien until December 12 but left the Gardaí liberty to re-enter the charges at any stage before that if needed.
