East Galway needs highest political representation possible - Higgins

“The Labour Party must continue to grow and develop in East Galway and it can best do this by achieving the highest political representation it can at Oireachtas level,” according to Lorraine Higgins, who is running as a candidate for the Seanad Eireann.

Ms Higgins, who is currently running as a candidate on the Industrial and Commercial panel having been nominated to do so by the Irish Hardware and Building Materials Association, said this week: “We achieved an historic mandate at the General Election by the election of our first party TD in East Galway since 1922 in Deputy Colm Keaveney. Now we can go that step further and ensure that East Galway is further represented in the Seanad.”

“For too long, many areas of East Galway were neglected – towns like Gort, Ballinasloe, Athenry, and Loughrea have been overlooked economically due to poor political representation over the years.

“I aim to change that by providing that necessary voice for the people of this area, so that I can bring their concerns to the floor of Seanad Eireann. Together with my colleague, Deputy Keaveney, we will provide a formidable team, arguing the case for this region at Oireachtas and Government level.”

“East Galway has plenty of potential and this must be tapped into. It can no longer be left in the backwaters of political life. I will ensure, once elected to Seanad Eireann, that the constituency will be in a position to benefit as soon as there is an upturn in the economy. There are lots of new businesses at mushroom stage in the area and I will do my very best to ensure that the right economic conditions exist for them to grow. Making credit available remains a key issue for this sector and I fully intend to pursue this at Government level,” said Ms Higgins.
