Public lecture on Cumann na mBan at Galway City Museum

Does your family have a Cumann na mBan badge from the 1914-23 era?

ANY GALWEGIANS possessing a Cumann na mBan badge from the revolutionary era are being asked to bring it to the Galway City Museum which is holding an illustrated talk on the group this weekend.

This Saturday from 2.30pm until 4pm, historian Ailbhe Rogers of Maynooth University, and archaeologist Paul Gosling of the GMIT, will give an illustrated talk entitled Badge, Brooch or Pin: a study of Cumann na mBan Insignia: 1914-1923. Founded in 1914 as a female auxiliary to the Irish Volunteers, Cumann na mBan adopted a badge featuring a rifle intertwined with the letters C na mB. Rogers and Gosling will explore the origins and design of these badges as they evolved from base-metal emblems of membership to mementos of service made from the finest materials.

Early booking via 091 532460 or by sending an email to [email protected] is essential as places are limited. See also www.galwaycitymuseum.ie
