Former Athlone Town manager has been appointed to the managerial helm at Sligo Rovers and will take up his new position with the North West club in November.

Having departed his Athlone Town role in June, Hewitt will replace Steve Feeney, who has confirmed his departure from the Sligo Rovers post for family and work reasons.

Hewitt had a successful four years as manager of the Athlone Town senior women’s team culminating in a historic appearance in the FAI Cup Final in November 2022. Unfortunately, defeat to Shelbourne was the outcome on that occasion, but during his time with the Midlands club, Hewitt nurtured and developed a team to compete at the higher echelons of the league table and in major cup competitions.

Hewitt was replaced at the Athlone Town helm by Ciaran Kilduff who has since repeated the former manager’s achievement in leading Athlone Town to a second FAI Cup Final appearance where Shelbourne will once again provide the opposition on November 19.

Sligo Rovers will be hoping that Hewitt’s expert knowledge acquired to date will have a similar impact when the new season commences in 2024. The Showgrounds based team have won just two of their 18 league games played this season, Athlone Town defeating them en route to their FAI Cup Final appearance.

Speaking following his new appointment, Hewitt stated that he spoke with the committee and staff of the club when the opportunity arose noting that the vision and plan for Sligo Rovers going forward was very impressive.

“The foundations laid by Steve Feeney make this job very appealing. I have always had the hunger to return to management and the break as served me well. I wish to build upon what has been achieved to date and there is no reason why Sligo Rovers cannot climb the league table next season,” Hewitt stated.
