This year's conference will consist of a series of keynote talks in the morning followed by a panel discussion and lunch. I hope none of you were put out in any major way by the recent storm Ali. I think the ferocity of that storm left many of us quite surprised. We had been warned it would be major, but not very, very major, so that when the sustained high winds began it left a lot of us nonplussed. Then we had Storm Bronagh which never came, was talked about but seems to have passed us by. So we don’t know what the weather for the future is likely to be.

Irish Special Forces (the Army Ranger Wing) operated in Western-occupied Afghanistan under NATO command, it was revealed last month, thanks to TD Clare Daly’s parliamentary question. The story received no media coverage. The operational purpose of these troops was not revealed. However, like Special Forces the world over, it was not pencils they were sharpening.

NUI Galway co-hosts Judging Shaw exhibition at Columbia University on Monday

NUI Galway and The Royal Irish Academy, in association with the Heyman Center, Columbia University, New York, will host a Judging Shaw Day, featuring a roundtable discussion entitled, ‘Shaw, Our Contemporary?’ a keynote lecture by Fintan O’Toole and a Judging Shaw Exhibition, on this Monday April 16 at Columbia University.

Tá siad ag teacht — RV Celtic Explorer leaves Newfoundland and heads for Galway

An international team of scientists from six countries set sail last week on Ireland’s national research vessel, RV Celtic Explorer on a major trans-Atlantic voyage to study the impact of climate change on the ocean. Departing from St. John’s Newfoundland, and due to arrive in Galway on 23 May, the Galway-based Marine Institute-led team of experts are surveying a transect of the Atlantic Ocean last surveyed 20 years ago to investigate carbon dioxide levels in the ocean. The survey is essential to understand and project how carbon dioxide emissions are accumulated in the oceans and the atmosphere, as well as its effects on the acidification of the ocean.

IT IS always something of a special occasion when Druid unveils a new writer, and all the more so when that writer comes from the west of Ireland. So there is much excitement about Helen and I, the debut play by Tuam's Meadhbh McHugh, which receives its world premiere at the Mick Lally Theatre on Tuesday September 13.
