Bowling leagues at Mayo Leisure Point

Fri, Jan 24, 2014

It is that time of year again when Mayo Leisure Point runs the inter-business bowling league. This league has been running for the past 20 years and has proven very successful with businesses all over Mayo competing. Its success is thanks to the businesses and teams which support it every year and to Sean Mulroy and Joe Togher who have sponsored the league since 1994.

All roads lead to Ballinasloe for Kiltane

Fri, Jan 24, 2014

If there is a man, woman, or child to be found the villages and towns that send their sons out to do battle in the blue and yellow of Kiltane on Sunday, it would be a safe assumption that they are tourists, trying to figure out why exactly there is no-one to be found in this secnic part of the country. They take a lot of things seriously in that enclave of the county, but not many things more seriously than the game of Gaelic football and on Sunday afternoon with a chance of an appearance in an All Ireland final in Croke Park, it’s the only thing that matters to the men who have been training all guns blazing since the end of 2012 to get to where they are on Sunday.

Connacht Cup takes centre stage on Sunday

Fri, Jan 24, 2014

Ballina Town will be looking to pick themselves up from last weekend’s defeat at the hands of Dublin side East Wall Bessborough in the sixth round of the FAI Junior Cup when they get straight back into action this Sunday in the Connacht Cup. The Super League champions came close to matching the metropolitans last weekend, but fell short thanks to a 57th minute Daniel Ennis header. This weekend’s opponents will have a more local feel as Ballina Town have a short trip to south Mayo to take on Partry Athletic in the fourth round of the provincial cup competition.

In Ardnaree the Benny Walkin Memorial tournament last weekend saw wins for Shane Moran, Fionn Gill, Stephen Collins, Dara Padden, Robert Barrett, Stephen Maughan, and Seamus Doherty across the various weight divisions in the boy one section. In the boy two section James McStravick and Ben Conway picked up wins, while Niamh O’Neill was the winner in the girl two competition. Connacht on the cusp of another milestone in Europe

Fri, Jan 17, 2014

It is uncharted waters for Connacht this weekend when they head to England with a place in the Heineken Cup quarter-finals up for grabs. This final pool three fixture at the home of current premiership leaders on Saturday (1.35pm) will decide which of the two teams finishes as runners-up and with it a spot in either the Heineken quarter-finals or the Amlin Cup. Toulouse, with an away fixture to Zebre, are almost guaranteed top spot, but it is all to play for at Allianz Park where favourites Saracens are 5/1 to reach the final of this most prestigious club competition.

Never having been in contention for qualification at this stage, and never having won in England, the odds, as always, are stacked against the men from the west. It is yet another David versus Goliath for Connacht. However coach Pat Lam is backing his team.

Fri, Jan 17, 2014

The whirlwind nature of Mayo’s start to the GAA season continues on Sunday when Mayo take on Roscommon in Ballinlough at 2pm in their third game in ten days in the competition. Ballina Town look for round seven spot in junior cup

Fri, Jan 17, 2014

Ballina Town will host East Wall Bessborough in the sixth round of the FAI Junior Cup in Belleek on Sunday afternoon. The Dublin based visitors are currently sitting in seventh spot in the 12 strong AUL Premier A table, 10 points off table toppers Kilbarrack United. The league leaders saw off East Wall Bessborough 3-1 last Sunday and Ballina will be hoping they can grab a similar win on Sunday.

Ballina Town warmed up for Sunday’s game with a 2-1 win over Galway Hibs in round two of the Connacht Junior Cup away from home. Back to back wins in external cup competitions on the road, following Ballina’s win over Castleisland the previous weekend in the fifth round of the FAI Junior Cup, has Fergal Forde’s men in very good form ahead of Sunday’s game. Tom O’Connor was their main man last weekend, bagging a goal at the end of each half to see off the Galwaymen, and Forde will be hoping for a similar return from his front man on Sunday. Forde has seen his squad stretched since the end of the league season with a number of retirements and departures for various reasons, and has been promoting from the clubs youth system, it will be another major test for both his experienced and inexperienced side this Sunday. If they come through on Sunday they have been drawn to face Limerick side Geraldine’s FC at home in the next round.

Mayo pass students test

Fri, Jan 10, 2014

The only thing that will be remembered for a long time after Friday nights game in MacHale Park, will be a trivia question for years to come. Who was the first Mayo player to get a black card? That unfortunate footnote in history has gone to Moy Davitts' Sean Kelly whose Mayo debut came to a premature end ten minutes after it started, when he was shown to the line as the game crept over into injury time.
