Lessons will be learned from Tyrone defeat

Fri, Feb 13, 2015

"The great thing about the league is that you can get and take lessons from the league and it’s not as disappointing as the championship as you haven’t three or four months to think about it and go over it. We’ve a game in three of four weeks to rectify it, which is great,” said Donal Vaughan on Monday evening this week, as he reflected on the previous day’s loss to Tyrone. Vaughan was speaking at the launch of the Sports Injuries and Sports Medicine Clinics (SISM Clinic), seminar on “How to improve your teams’ speed, performance and reduce injuries” which will take place on Thursday February 19 in the SISM Clinic in Moneen Industrial Estate in Castlebar at 7.30pm. Guest speakers on the night will include Vaughan, former Mayo manager James Horan, and broadcaster Timmy McCarthy.

We were warned this could happen

Fri, Feb 13, 2015

It wasn’t as if we weren’t warned. We expected a Tyrone backlash, we didn’t think it would be so convincing. The scrutiny and criticism directed at Mickey Harte’s Tyrone after their capitulation against Monaghan in the first round more than galvanised the red hand for their trip to Castlebar. Sports writers, commentators, analysts, and even Mickey Harte’s most loyal supporters questioned his credentials and his team; they’re as good as dead it was declared.

The heavy chilly fog never lifted despite the best efforts of the February sun, but conditions were perfect for running.

Break for Celtic after two defeats on the spin

Fri, Feb 13, 2015

Castlebar Celtic will have a weekend off before their next outing in the Women’s National League on Sunday week, when they travel to Belfield to take on UCD Waves in round 17 of the Women’s National League.

Celtic will be hoping that the rest can spark a big improvement in their fortunes after they suffered two losses in as many weeks when they conceded 11 goals, and did not score any in league defeat at home to Wexford Youths where they went down 3-0, before Raheny United put eight past them in the League Cup quarter-final last Sunday. Celtic trailed 2-0 at the break in that game, but the floodgates opened up for the hosts after the break when they found the back of the net six more times. Celtic are currently sitting in fifth place in the league table with six league games left to play this season.
