Reidy expects a tough test on Sunday

Mayo ladies manager Kevin Reidy is expecting a much tougher test for his ladies senior side this Sunday in the Connacht final against Galway than they got in their semi-final. Mayo’s 26 point drubbing of Leitrim wasn’t the ideal preparation for the premier game in Connacht, but everything is moving along nicely on the training field ahead of Sunday’s game in Fr O’Hara Park in Charlestown at 4pm according to the Galway native.

Last weekend’s stroke competition sponsored by Feeney Brothers was won by Paul Hickey with a score of 56 nett playing off 16. Martin Keane came second with a score of 62 nett off 20, and Tommy Moran third with a score of 64 nett playing off 7. The gross prize went to Paul Walsh with a score of 71 gross off 7. The ladies’ competition was won by Kung Fanning with a score of 64 nett off 17, second place went to Ita Fahy with a score of 69 nett off 27, with Marge Hierons coming home in third with a round off 69 nett off 16. Kay Buckley won the gross prize with a score of 84 gross off 13. The junior section of the competition was won by Paul Finnegan who scored 65 nett playing off 19.

“Just because you were there last year doesn’t mean that it’s going to be easy to get back there again the next year.” Said Mayo minor manager Ray Dempsey earlier this week when speaking to the Mayo Advertiser about his side’s first foray into championship action for 2009. The wily Knockmore man will be taking charge of the Mayo minor side for the third year in a row, the past two years of his tenure have seen wildly contrasting fortunes on the field. 2007 ended almost before it began, eliminated by Roscommon on a forgettable Saturday evening in Hyde Park, followed last year by another so near yet so far story for Mayo football when his side came with in seconds of claiming an All Ireland title.

The Siobhán Herr President’s prize, which was played over a 27 hole stroke competition was won by K Henry with a score of 100.5, M Phillips came home in second place with a 101 off 12, D Walsh came third also on 101 off 14, with T Dillon coming home in fourth place also with a score of 101. The gross prize was won by J Henry. The best 18 prize went to D Burke who hit a 66 off 13, with M Webb winning the past President prize with a 68. The Cat 1 competition was won by B Philips with a score of 103, D Finnegan won the Cat 2 competition with a score of 103.5, while T Grennan won the Cat 3 competition with a score of 104.5 off 25.

Westport keep winning as others try to keep pace

Four games played, four wins, and 12 points on the table, it has been business as usual for Westport United since the Super League swung back into action in the past number of weeks. The defending champions were always going to be the team that everybody would have to chase, but even as few as four games in they look like no one will be able to step up to the mark to haul them in this season. There nearest challengers at the moment are Ballina Town, a side who really need to deliver the title or some form of silverware this season to give them something to show for their top of the table battling over the past number of seasons. On Sunday the Beleek Park men will host Iorras Aontaithe and if they fail to see off the Erris men they could see Ballina extend their lead at the top of the table from three to six points with only five games gone in the season.

Mayo AC athletes compete nationally

At the Dublin Athletic Board Graded meeting last week two Mayo AC vets took part in the 1500 metres race. Seamus (Jim) Gaughan has been training back in Mayo recently and it showed as he recorded an excellent 4.57.33 in the over 55 category. His Dublin based colleague and clubmate Mick Ferry (over 60) also had a good run to finish 5.40.13.

In the Lisburn Half Marathon last Wednesday, Mayo AC's Robert Malseed ran a great time of 71.06 to finish second to Brian McMahon (Clonliffe Harriers) who won in 69.00. Pauline Curley (Tullamore Harriers) won the women's race in 76.28. On Sunday last John Byrne had his second 10k victory in a week when he won the Annaghdown 10k in a good time of 33.05 in very warm conditions. Dave Huane was seventh in 37.58. Other Mayo AC finishers were Gerry Galvin 41.32, Christy O'Malley 48.10, Sarah Syron 51.30, and Chris O'Connell 52.28. Regina Casey (GCH) was the first woman in 39.35.

A big win, but what did we really learn?

I am confused as to the real potential of this Mayo team. I can’t honestly say how good this team is, as I doubt they have ever played an easier inter-county match in their lives, nor will they play an easier one ever again. I suggested here in this paper last week that I fully expected Roscommon to put it up to Mayo for 40 minutes or so but that ultimately Mayo’s greater fitness, ability, and general know how, would surface and they would pull away from Roscommon in the last 30 minutes possibly winning by 5/6 points. As you now know we won by 20! I had alluded to Roscommon’s morale-boosting victory over Leitrim a few weeks earlier that would have seen them arrive in Castlebar full of hope and brimming with confidence. I met a few of their supporters before the match in the Sportlann who had the audacity to suggest that they were in fact well capable of beating this particular Mayo team, and for me not to be one bit surprised if they pulled off a famous victory. Oh how wrong they were. This was arguably the worst performance from a senior Roscommon team in a championship encounter that I or many others have ever witnessed. Fergal O’Donnell, the messiah who had guided the county to their historic minor All Ireland victory in 2006, was in charge and their supporters were giddy with excitement and expectancy. Eleven of that minor squad were involved in one way or another last Saturday and they appeared to be relaxed and in confident mood as I watched them go through their paces in the warm up on the back pitch a half hour before the game.

The Cat 1 section saw Pat Carney take home the prize, while Brian Farragher took home the Cat 2. Andrew Murphy went home with the Cat 3 prize after a score of 39 points. The ladies’ competition was won by Mary Sullivan with a score of 38 points. Clarie Naughton came home in second with a score of 39 points and Kate Gallagher was third with a score of 37. The annual JFC Days will take place at the club on Thursday June 25 and Friday June 26. The charity to benefit this year is Goal. The entry of €200 per team includes a steak dinner together with entry to the fundraising dance to be held in the McWilliam Park Hotel on the Friday night. John O’Shea of Goal will be in attendance for the eagerly looked forward to event The Ladies’ Captain’s Prize (Una Clarke) will take place on July 5.
