The chairman of the Mayo League, Pat Quigley, offered his sympathies to the Downes family, and expressed the League’s feelings on the death of Henry Downes last week. “I want to express my deep sadness and profound loss on the death of a dear football colleague and a great personal friend of 35 years,” Mr Quigley said. “Henry Downes was a legend in terms of the growth and expansion of Mayo football, and he was a pioneer and visionary in this respect. His commitment and dedication to the development of facilities at Milebush Park during the eighties is evident for all to see today. He was an outstanding character of Castlebar with a fabulous knowledge of local history, and a great pride in his local town. His sad passing will leave a major void for all his family, colleagues, friends and neighbours. We extend our deepest sympathies to Bernie, Emer, Hilary, Maeve, Gabriel, Declan and Colin along with his brother Donal, and all extended family members. May he rest in peace.”

If you wind back the clock just a little under a year to Saturday March 7 2009, Kiltimagh threw in on their 2009 season down in the junior ranks in the junior league against Balla, it was a long way to fall from being in touching distance of senior football a couple of years earlier. That day, Balla were the challengers and Kiltimagh put them to the sword. Come the end of May and Lacken were first up in section four of the TF Royal Hotel Mayo Junior Championship, a 0-12 to 0-4 win over the Lacken men set in motion the journey that has brought them to where they are now, Croke Park and an All Ireland final date with Castlegregory from Kerry this Sunday which throws in at 2pm.

Just after the final whistle had blown in McHale Park last Sunday evening and with the taste of victory still fresh in his mouth, Mayo manager John O’Mahony was still urging caution despite the comprehensive manner in which his side had just dismantled Galway. “It's two points at the end of the day, you won't be asking me about this next September, or October, or even July,” was O’Mahony take on people getting carried away following last Sunday’s result.
The Ballaghaderreen club man also knows that this Sunday’s trip to Omagh will be a very difficult test and nothing will come easy from the Ulster men. “I'd caution any elation after today. We have to go up to Tyrone next week and there'll be a backlash up there after what happened last night [Tyrone were beaten well by Derry in their opening league game last Saturday night]”. But O’Mahony knows that his side have been working hard and will have to work as hard in every league game in what he sees as being a very tough division. “The thing that people need to realise about these guys is that they are good footballers, they're working very hard and we'll see where that takes them. You take points where you get them, there'll be an awful lot of teams taking points off each other as this progresses.”

After two cancellations due to weather conditions, the ninth and final race of the 2009 Vodafone C&C Cellular Mayo Road Race League takes place in Westport on Sunday February 7, starting at 2pm. Participants are strongly advised to allow sufficient time to travel to the race as there is a football match at Castlebar on that day.
There have only been a couple of races in Connacht so far this year, and results from them indicate the Westport 5k race will have some form athletes battling for precious league points. The league prizes will depend on the best six race points totals. Gerry Ryan (GCH) was in excellent form winning the Tuam 8k and has 124 points from his five races so far, four wins and a second place. In the expected absence of current league leader Robert Malseed and Robbie Matthews (injured) the GCH man looks the likely winner. Last year's race winner Martin Conroy (Sligo AC) has been in great form recently on track and cross country but may opt for the senior indoors championships in Belfast. This could leave in-form John Byrne and current o40 leader Martin Corcoran (Craughwell AC), in a tight race for the third senior spot. There should be a good contest for the other top places from rapidly improving Roger Barrett (Ballina AC), TJ McHugh, and top junior Daniel Murray.

The 2010 rally season kicks off in earnest this weekend with the Safety Direct Galway International Rally, the opening round of the Citroen Tarmac Rally Championship. The traditional season-opener has received a near capacity entry, and promises plenty of exciting action over the two day event. The recent announcement that Citroen is to be the title sponsor of the Tarmac Championship for 2010 is a major boost for Ireland’s popular international rally series. The French car manufacturer is synonymous with rallying at world level, and currently holds the FIA World Rally Championship title for manufacturers, while Citroen driver Sebastian Loeb has won the driver’s title for the past six years. Based in Oranmore, the Safety Direct Galway International Rally will get under way with a ceremonial start in the village on Friday evening, before competitors tackle nine stages on Saturday followed by another six stages on Sunday.

Straight into battle for Costello
Fri, Feb 05, 2010
Time waits for no man, as the saying goes, and that definitely rings true for Pat Costello. When Kevin Reidy informed the Mayo Ladies County Board the week before last that he would be resigning his post as manager of the Mayo ladies’ senior team it left the board in somewhat of a quandary. Last Thursday night the board met to quickly appoint a new manager and they appointed Pat Costello to the post.

Ballina Town safely made it through to the sixth round of the FAI Junior Cup last Sunday with a comprehensive 6-1 win over Cashel Celtic in Belleek. Hoping to join them in the next round is the only other Mayo side left in the competition, Iorras Aontaithe, who entertain Carrick United in Carnenash on Sunday at 12pm. The men from Erris went on an amazing cup run last year making it all the way to the semi-final stage of the competition before they were dumped out by the eventual winners, Ballymun United, in Milebush after a close fought battle. This weekend Carrick United from Waterford will make the long 400 mile plus round trip from their southern base to the Erris peninsula. Iorras made it into the open rounds of the competition thanks to a win away to Manulla in the final closed round of the competition in the middle of January, where they came from one down at the break to grab two goals through Brendan Nallen and Ivan Barrett in the closing 10 minutes to get the win.
