If one incident defined how much more Dublin were up for this game that Mayo it was when early in the second half, Aidan O’Shea got in behind the Dublin defence. He stumbled but fed the ball to Mark Ronaldson, who pulled the trigger. But out of nowhere Denis Bastick got back to not only block the ball, but gather it and break clear. It was an outstanding feat of athleticism and brilliance by the Ballymun Kickhams man.

Mayo book semi-final spot with Galway

Mayo booked their place in the semifinal of the Connacht u21 Football Championship on Wednesday night with an 11 point win over Leitrim in Castlebar.

The Mayo win was secured with a three goal second half blitz that killed off the challenge of the visitors who had put up a stout challenge against Niall Hefferenan’s men in the first half. The game was halted for 15 minutes in the second half when Leitrim defender Gary Butler picked an injury in the process of Mayo scoring their second goal through Diarmuid O’Connor. The Fenagh-St Cailin’s man was on the ground for a quarter of an hour before the ambulance arrived at the ground. Later on Wednesday night the Leitrim GAA Twitter account tweeted that the full back had “thankfully no lasting serious injury”.

Things can change very quickly

Two weeks is a long time in sport. All of a sudden after two very impressive wins in the National League things look rosy in the Mayo camp as they sit proudly at the summit of division one. We have to be clear on this, Mayo are not going to win every game left in the league (maybe they will). The management are still learning and their most important lesson came when Tyrone visited MacHale Park. You cannot but be impressed by the way they and the players have responded, a thrashing of Monaghan followed by a hard fought win away against Derry in Celtic Park.

Lilywhites challenge next up for hurlers

The Mayo senior hurlers fell to their second defeat in this year’s National Hurling League last Sunday when Down ran out 2-20 to 0-15 winners in Elverys MacHale Park. JP Coen’s men now face the toughest test of their season so far when they head to Newbridge tomorrow afternoon to take on last year’s Christy Ring Cup winners, Kildare. The Lilywhites have a 100 per cent record so far with wins over Meath, Down, and Armagh under their belts. Their wins over Meath and Armagh came on the road and over their three games they have scored 5-64.

Mayo currently find themselves in second bottom of the six team group at present, level on points with Armagh but trailing the Orchard County on scoring difference, with Donegal rooted to the bottom with no points to show for their three games to date.

Top of the table clash for Browne’s ladies

The Mayo ladies senior football team will make the trip to Blackhill on Sunday to take on Monaghan in a top of the table clash against the ladies from the Farney county. Both sides are locked on nine points from their four games so far thanks to three wins from their four games, also on nine points in the table at the moment are defending All Ireland champions Cork.

Monaghan’s Niall Maguire and Enda Sherry stormed to an emphatic victory on Sunday’s Hotel Ballina and Kennedy Motors Mayo Stages Rally, finishing just over a minute ahead of their nearest rivals Frank Wray and Kieran McGrath. Wray, finishing in a career best second place, was closely followed by Mayo and District Motorsport Club crew Aaron McHale and Paul McGee.

Mayo hit for eight by Sligo Rovers

The Mayo League exited the EA Sports Cup at the first round stage on Tuesday night when they were thrashed 8-0 by League of Ireland Premier Division side Sligo Rovers in the Showgrounds. Owen Heary’s side progressed to the next round, thanks to the drubbing handed out to the Mayo League selection which included a hat-trick from youngster Liam Flatley.
