The Mayo Senior championship quarter finals threw up a couple of eye catching results over last weekend. It was the first time ever that the four group winners failed to win their quarter finals, although Ballintubber did get through to the semi-final at the second time of asking after Wednesday night's replay with Hollymount- Carramore.

This promises to be something special on Sunday, we got it wrong last weekend when we picked Balla to see off Lahardane and book their spot in Sunday's semifinal — John Maughan's men hit Balla with everything they had and were deserving eight point winners. They never let Balla settle and against the wind they went in leading by two points, in the second half they really upped the ante and outscored their opponents by 2-7 to 1-2, after they had been pulled level five minutes into the second half, with sub Cormac Reilly netting two goals in the final quarter of the game.

Mayo U18s win in Clare to go to two from two

The U18s Mayo Volleyball Club defeated Clare in Ennis on Sunday. Both teams started slowly in the opening set. The two sides were exchanging many scores until Mayo settled midway though unleashing a rally of scores finishing with a 25-15 win.

Back to reality with a bang in the club championship

It was back to the harsh reality for Mayo players last weekend as they played in the final group games of the championship for their clubs. It is not the easiest thing to motivate yourself for — a club game after what they have been through, as most if not all of them will take a long time to get over the heartbreak of the All-Ireland final. It is a weird scenario. People from opposing clubs who were screaming from the rafters for you two weeks previous now see you as the panto villain, while club players playing against you would like nothing more than to have a cut at you, to take you down a peg or two, knowing you will be in a relatively fragile state of mind. For some the club is a great distraction especially if their club has a chance of winning silverware or making it through to the next round. For others it is a burden having to play when you know your team is going nowhere.

Elite eight get ready to clash this weekend

After one of the busiest weekends in the club calendar last weekend the quarter-finalists in the Mayo GAA senior championships are now known. The defending champions Castlebar Mitchels who were pushed into second place in their group after a Ballina Stephenites saw them off 3-8 to 1-10 last weekend - will face Knockmore in the last eight on Saturday in Ballina at 5pm in a repeat of last years county final. Knockmore were handed the toughest draw of all the table toppers when Mitchels slipped into second place in the table thanks to efforts of Evan Regan and Ciaran Tracey who finished up with 1-3 each in Ballina’s surprise win. Knockmore made it three wins from three in their group with a comfortable 2-11 to 1-9 win over Westport in Castlebar, with Peter Naughton hitting six points for them.

Castlebar Golf Club wins All Ireland Jimmy Bruen

Castlebar Golf Club is the All Ireland Jimmy Bruen champion after a thrilling 3-2 win over Ulster Champions Warrenpoint on Saturday at Carton House. The Mayo club captained by John Kelly came through their semifinal on Friday in dramatic fashion with Tom Moylett and Mark Corrigan securing the 3-2 win with a birdie on the 19th hole play off against Munster Champions Ballykisteen.

Heartbreak for brave ladies

It was double heartbreak for Mayo's senior football teams after last weekend as our ladies fell at the final hurdle to Dublin in the LGFA final last Sunday in Croke Park. This was a keenly contested game for long periods however three yellow cards over the duration of the game, at one stage leaving Mayo down to 13 players, proved to be the telling factor as Mayo were literally out on their feet at the full time whistle.

All down for decision this weekend in senior championship

It's back to the cut and thrust of action in the Mayo GAA senior club championship for the first time in over three months this weekend. While the junior championship has been moving along in the background and the semi-final stages down for decision this weekend, it has been long summer without championship action for the 16 senior clubs.
