Westport triathlon is creeping up soon
Places on the Pulse triathlon club Westport triathlon on Saturday July 16 are filling up fast and you had better act soon to book your place in this exciting event. The triathlon is not a privately organised event, but is a not for profit club event and Pulse triathlon club hopes to encourage a number of first time triathletes to take part in the competition. The route is a 750m swim along The Quay pier, a 22.5km cycle — most of which is coastal out past Murrisk and back, and finishes with a 5km run from the pier head into Westport House grounds and back. The Atlantic Coast Hotel has sponsored a prize for the entry draw and the event lends itself to newcomers to the sport, rather than the elite. You can register at www.pulsetri.com

Ballina Town manager Alan Gough always had a difficult task this season, taking over from Brendan Kenny who had just taken the side to back to back Super League titles. But Gough has managed to steer his side, which is in a transition period, to second place in the table - within striking distance of Castlebar Celtic, with half of the season left. Last weekend Gough faced a tough task in bringing his side to Swinford, the team he guided to safety last season in a year when four teams were relegated.

Travelling to Garrymore is a rare adventure for me. In fact it is one of the few grounds in this county that when I travel to it I invariably get lost along the way. Instead of taking the more direct (if you could ever use the word ‘direct’ in association with any passage to Garrymore) route via Claremorris, I thought I remembered the less travelled road up through Mayo Abbey being a little more interesting and so I veered right at the top of Balla village and not for the first time.

Summer tag tournament
Castlebar Rugby Club is hosting the summer tag tournament which will be running from June 23 to August 5. Teams will consist of seven players, three male and four female, on the field and a team can have up to 12 players in a squad. All team entries must be in by Monday next, June 21. Players who do not have a team but would like to play can still get involved and Castlebar Rugby Club will match you up with a team looking for players. For more information email [email protected] or go along to the open training session on Tuesday at 7pm. Entry cost is €25 per player.

Injuries and comebacks ahead of Galway game

Last weekend’s opening round of action in the senior and intermediate club championship gave the Mayo management team a chance run their eye over a number of players who were coming back from injuries. Midfielder Ronan McGarrity came through Ballina’s defeat to Shrule-Glencorrib unscathed, but it may be too soon for the influential player to make the starting 15. Seamus O’Shea, who is another option for the middle of the park, also put in a full shift for Breaffy in their win over Ballinrobe alongside his brother Aidan who lined out in midfield in a recent challenge game against Donegal. Keith Higgins also got back on the road to recovery after his recent hamstring injury when he started for Ballyhaunis, while Neil Douglas and Enda Varley also came through their games for Castlebar Mitchels and Garrymore

Mayo athletes gearing up for World Summer games

There will be plenty of Mayo eyes and ears looking and listening out for results from Athens from Saturday week when the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games kick off. Four Mayo athletes will be representing Ireland in the Greek city and all are going for gold. Mary McDermott from Swinford will be taking part in the bocce competition, while Deirdre Gannon from Westport and her namesake Deirdre Garvin from Claremorris will be competing in the bowling competition. Castlebar’s Paul Kavanagh will be hoping to have his serve and volley in top shape when he takes on the best in the world in the table tennis event.

The majority of the divisions in the Mayo League will reach the midway point this weekend with the seventh round of games taking place across all divisions over Saturday and Sunday. Castlebar Celtic are still top of the table in the Super League, but their rampage through Mayo football this year was knocked off kilter last weekend when Westport United knocked them out of the FCS Cup at the semi-final stage with a 2-0 win in Westport.

On Sunday they will face a long trek to take on Iorras Aontaithe in Carnenash as they look to keep their four point advantage intact at the top of the table. Westport United will look to build on last weekend’s win when they take on the surprise package of the season, Claremorris in Concannon Park. Claremorris are sitting in second place in the table, four points ahead of Westport. Kieran Mulchrone’s men will be hoping that last weekend’s win can be the start of their pursuit of Celtic at the top of the table. Ballina Town, who have shaken off some early teething problems under new management, are currently in third place in the table and will be hoping to keep in with a shout of catching those above them when they travel to Swinford on Sunday. The tight nature of the eight team division sees Swinford, who are second last, only five points behind their visitors on Sunday and a win would push them right back up the table. The final game in the Super League will pit rock bottom and winless Ballinrobe Town against Manulla in Carramore. Ballinrobe have struggled to adapt to the pace of the Super League so far this season having only hit the back of the net seven times while conceding 23 goals in the process. Manulla have a perfect 50 per cent record so far having won three and lost three so far, the smart money would be on their making it a fourth win on Sunday.

While the fallout from Mayo’s Connacht Championship opener against London has been the talk of newspaper pages, online discussions, and bar stools across the county for the past fortnight, the real beating heart of Gaelic football in the county is about to be unleashed this weekend. The long hard slog since the turn of the year, through wet, muddy, fields, gym and weight circuits, for the humble club player is about to come to fruition this weekend when Treanlaur Catering Mayo Senior and Intermediate football championship gets under way.

Connacht Rugby is already swinging into gear to cope with an expected increase in supporters after the province drew European blue-bloods Toulouse in Tuesday’s Heineken Cup draw. Covering for the east terrace at the Galway Sportsground is expected to start within the next two weeks to ensure the College Road venue is more conducive to Heineken Cup rugby fans who will welcome four-times European champions Toulouse later this year. Connacht, in tier four of the 24 teams, has been grouped with the current French champions Toulouse, Amlin Cup winners Harlequins, and Gloucester, who finished third in the English premiership.

The club championship kicks off this weekend. It is a fact that the majority of teams that play this weekend believe they will be good enough to win their respective matches. However 2011 will undoubtedly cough up its fair share of surprising results. We also have sufficient proof that, on any given Sunday, the majority of teams in the county are capable of beating each other. Form in the league counts for nothing when championship comes around. We have several teams sprinkled around the county that excel in beating more fancied opponents. Our Crossmolina boys are off to Garrymore this Saturday evening to play against a team that rarely suffers in the confidence department! I am very aware of how formidable they can be in their own back yard.
