St Gerald’s bow out while Davitt College, Our Lady’s, and Sancta Maria claim titles

St Gerald’s College, Castlebar’s, quest for a three in a row in Connacht Post Primary School’s Senior A Football Championship came to an end in Bekan on Saturday. The Castlebar school lost out to Roscommon CBS in a weather affected semifinal that saw St Gerald’s not register a single score in the first half and the victors snatching the win with a goal right at the death, which was their only score in the second half. St Gerald’s went in trailing by 1-3 to 0-0 at the turnaround, with Roscommon CBS’s county u21 man Noel Gately grabbing their first goal early in the opening half.

Mayo sides go for glory in junior cup

The mouth-watering taste of a possible all Mayo Connacht Junior Cup final is still there for the eating this weekend, when three Mayo sides go into action in the Connacht Junior Cup semi-finals.

With Castlebar, Ballina, and Westport all still left in the final four of the competition at least one Mayo side will make the final, with Westport and Ballina meeting in Carrowholly in one semi-final and Castlebar looking to upset the applecart when they host Monivea in their semifinal.

The newly revamped Castlebar Adventure Duathlon on Saturday March 14 was launched at the shores of Lough Lannagh recently by the noted endurance man Gerry Duffy, Gerry Duffy is no stranger to adventure racing and has competed on the circuit many a time, also there to lend her support was Joanne Grehan, CEO of Mayo Local enterprise, stating that this event will be huge for Castlebar.

Castlebar event will be the first of 2015’s adventure duathlons to take place in the west this year. And for those who do not fancy the adventure there is a shorter course option. If you are a cyclist and not a runner or vice versa, there is a plan for you too, with the relay option So there is no excuse not to get involved.

O'Shea stars as Mayo run out easy winners

Mayo picked up their second win in this years National Football League on Sunday in Elverys MacHale Park, when they saw off Monaghan in an ill disciplined affair that saw two Monaghan players sent off, along two black cards being issued by referee Rory Hickey in a contest that was punctured by numerous scuffles off the ball. In truth Hickey seemed to lose control of the game early in the second half as fracas broke out all over the field.

Holmes happy with improvement shown

Mayo joint manager Pat Holmes was happy with his sides performance on Sunday in their win over Monaghan, but there's still plenty room of improvement he said: “We created loads of chances, we have a bit of work to do yet and things to improve on, but we were looking for an improvement on our performance the last day, we would have been disappointed with that but we knew that we were better than we showed the last day and in fairness to the boys they came out and played very, very well.”

Gerald’s look to pass semifinal exam

The defending Connacht Colleges Senior A Football Championship champions, St Gerald’s College, Castlebar, will be looking to get back into the final of the competition tomorrow when they take on Roscommon CBS in the semifinal of the premier schools football championship in the province.

The Castlebar outfit booked their place in tomorrow’s encounter with a four point win over fellow Mayo school St Muredach’s, Ballina, last Thursday in the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence in Bekan, and it is to the same venue they will go tomorrow to take on the Roscommon town side at 2pm.
