He is one of the most successful captains Mayo have ever had on the football field, yet he is still only 20 years of age. This time three years ago, Stephen Coen was preparing to lead the Mayo minors out on to Croke Park in the All Ireland minor final against Tyrone, in the 36 months that have passed since then he has captained Mayo to win that minor final, kicked the insurance score in the Sigerson Cup final this year, lined out for his club in an All Ireland final back in Croke Park, and at the end of the spring he captained the Mayo U21s to the All Ireland title in Cork.

Mayo similarly have shown a special kind of resilience down through the years, through dark days they have raged, and savoured the good ones, with the greatest one still to come to fruition. Meath power home in final ten against gutsy Mayo

With nine minutes left to go, Mayo pulled themselves level with Meath in Semple Stadium and the game hung firmly in the balance as a brave Mayo led by the excellent Fergal Boland put themselves in with a shot of claiming the Richie McElligott Cup. But over the closing stretch of the game Meath found a second wind to power home to a deserved win, even if the scoreline was a bit flattering to them as Mayo left plenty of gaps at the back as they went chasing the game in the final few minutes.

Hoban in Regions Cup squad

Westport United's David Hoban will be part of the Irish squad that will take part in this Regions Cup in Italy at the end of the month. The United man will make up part of a 18-man squad that have been drawn in a group with Macedonia, Slovenia and Italy. Manulla's Cillian McGlade has been put on standby for the squad. The competition kicks off on September 28 when Ireland take on Italy, they follow that up with a clash with Macedonia on September 30 and then take on Slovenia on October 2.

Canty and Gleeson take wins in Claremorris

The 15th Annual De Care Dental Claremorris 8k took place recently. It was also a target race in the 2016 Mayo AC Vodafone C&C Cellular Club League. The 8k race was over a newly measured one lap course starting at Claremorris track, and replaced the five mile route which was used previously and started in the town centre.

The players and officials have the trivial matters out of the way and will have their match day suits ready for the off and press commitments done and dusted. Mayo line up series of fundraising events

Mayo GAA have lined up a series of fundraising events in the lead up to and after next Sunday's All Ireland senior football final in Croke Park. After the final the official Mayo GAA team banquet will take place in Citywest hotel on Sunday evening September 18. Tables of ten cost €800 or tickets can be purchased individually for €80. Afters tickets can be purchased for €20. All tickets can be bought through the office in MacHale Park. Contact Dermot on (094) 9250487 or (087) 6219843.

The night before the final there will also be a function in City West, the night will begin at 9pm with a panel chat featuring Joe Brolly, David Brady, John Madden, Bernard Flynn and Willie Joe Padden which will happening from 10pm. It will be covered live on Mid West radio. There will be ten All Ireland tickets up for grabs on the night. There will be a band and Dj also on the night.

King Kenny looking for another crown

He's got All Ireland winners medals in the bag at both hurling and football; he also picked up a u21 football All Ireland winners medal earlier this year and had some time with the senior football panel in the early months of the year; then followed that up with a Nicky Rackard Cup winners medal with the Mayo senior hurlers in Croke Park and is now going to looking for an All Ireland u21B winners medals with the Mayo hurlers tomorrow. It's not been a bad few years for Tooreen's David Kenny on the football and hurling fields around the country.
