We should say no to the IMF

Fri, Feb 18, 2011

Dear Editor,
We, the Irish people do not have to pay the debt of foreign banks. We didn’t borrow the money. There is another way. Iceland had the same problem. They were told they needed the IMF but they stood firm and the people refused. They refused to pay the private debt of the banks. As soon as the market saw the rotten banks were gone another good bank lent them money and this year Iceland has three per cent growth in their economy. They survived. We can do the same here. We need to stand up, tell the Government that we won’t pay. We need to vote for independents who will stand up for us in the Dáil, vote in a block and call a halt to this madness. All the main parties Fine Fáil, Fine Gael, and Labour want us to pay the banks’ debt. Iceland said No. We should say No.

That is a lot of increases. So what has happened to counteract this continuous rise in the cost of living? Nothing. Instead the minimum wage has been cut, social welfare has been cut, the children’s allowance has been cut and there have been widespread redundancies. It is a ridiculous country really.
