With hay fever season in full swing, drivers in Mayo are being warned about the potential road safety danger posed by sneezing bouts behind the wheel and drowsiness caused by medications.

Noel Gibbons, road safety officer with Mayo County Council, outlined how a recent survey in the UK revealed 70 per cent of drivers suffer the effects of hay fever and the season is reaching its peak this month.

Pedestrian killed in early morning collision

A man in his 60's was fatally injured when he was struck by a van at approximately 3.30am this morning, (Tuesday, June 10) on the Ballycastle Road in Killala. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the road was closed off to facilitate an investigation by Garda forensic collision investigators. The driver of the van was uninjured in the incident.  Gardai are appealing for witnesses who may have driven on the road this morning to contact them at Killala, Garda Station on 096 32111.
