Lynda Huxley, of GMIT Campus, Castlebar, will give a talk called The Amazing Swifts of Mayo on Tuesday January 20 at 8pm at the Westport Coast Hotel. These amazing birds do not touch land for the first two years of their lives, and only do so later to build nests and raise their young. There has been a 46 per cent drop in the population of these birds in Ireland, and Huxley will discuss the reasons for this, conservation measures to preserve the birds, and tell us about these harbingers of spring. Common sense parenting course

Ballina Neighbourhood Youth Project is running a common sense parenting course beginning in February. The course runs for six weeks, one morning a week in the NYP on Pearse Street. Common Sense Parenting provides parents of children aged six to 16 years with a menu of proved techniques that will aid you in building good family relationships, preventing and correcting misbehaviour, using consequences to improve behaviour, teaching self control, and staying calm. Castlebar trialogue meeting

Trialogue is an open forum for discussion on mental health issues. Users of the mental health services, carers, health care professionals, their friends, and everyone in the community are welcome. A trialogue group is a neutral space where communities can gather to develop their understanding of mental health issues, the challenges of maintaining mental health, and to transform thinking on developing better services and healthy communities. The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 7pm in GMIT, Castlebar.

Health fair in Castlebar

There will be a health fair for carers on January 27 in the Welcome Inn Hotel in Castlebar between 11am and 3pm. There will be a number of different stalls including beauticians and hairdressers from Westport CFE, Specsavers Castlebar, Deaf Hear, chiropody from Footworks Clinic in Ballina, and Croi. Eastern rite liturgy

There will be an Eastern rite liturgy at 2.30pm Church of Holy Rosary Castlebar this Sunday January 11. The rite will include the blessing of holy waters and novena to Saint Sharbel and anointing with holy oil from his tomb. Ballina’s Heroes for Hospice group wishes to thank all those who supported its spectacular sell-out Beyond the Barricade musical in Ballina Arts Centre on December 10, 11, 12, and 13. The group will once again stage the breathtaking Les Miserables inspired show in Castlebar’s Royal Theatre on Friday January 16 and Saturday January 17. Locally-based architect George Peterseil will launch his new book House Whisper - Energies of Man, Places and Spaces at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar today (Friday) at 7.30pm. “We all live in a place and a space we call home. But how deeply are we connected to it? According to quantum physics, more than 90 per cent of reality is invisible. This apparently empty space is actually filled with energy that contains intelligence and stores all past, present, and future events.” By sharing his personal journey from living a life of separation to one of connection, George Peterseil guides you on your own journey to nurture a deeper connection with yourself and your environment.
