Common sense parenting course in Ballina

Ballina Neighbourhood Youth Project is running a common sense parenting course beginning in February. The course runs for six weeks, one morning a week in the NYP on Pearse Street. Common sense parenting provides parents of children aged six to 16 years with a menu of proved techniques that will aid them in building good family relationships, preventing and correcting misbehaviour, using consequences to improve behaviour, teaching self control, and staying calm. Hospice ecumenical service

The ecumencial service for Mayo Roscommon Hospice Let Love Shine a Light appeal takes place on Sunday January 18 in St John’s Rest and Care Centre, Knock, commencing at 3.45pm. All those for whom lights were sponsored on the Tree of Light will be prayed for at the service. All are welcome.

Horan named as Mayo Person of the Year

Former Mayo senior football manager James Horan has been announced as the winner of the Muintir Mhaigh Eo Atha Cliath Mayo Person of the Year for 2015. The announcement was made yesterday evening by Muintir Mhaigh Eo Atha Cliath in the Ballsbridge Hotel in Dublin. The winner of the annual Meitheal Award was also revealed yesterday evening with the Dolmen Clubhouse Ltd, which comprises the Dolmen Clubhouse in Ballina and the Cairde Clubhouse in Castlebar, picking up the award for this year.

Confusion in council chamber over vote on Irish Water motion

Mayo County Council took not one, but two votes on what appeared on the surface to be the same motion last Monday and ended up with two different results.

Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway Walsh had a notice of motion down for debate on the agenda for the January meeting, which had been adjourned from the December meeting.

Seaweed cutters fear for the future

The application by a single company, BioAtlantis Teo, for exclusive rights to cut and harvest seaweed in Clew Bay has sparked major fears among local farmers who have traditionally cut seaweed in the area. Such has been the concern to the application for 10 year exclusive rights lodged by BioAtlantis Teo a new community group the Clew Bay Seaweed Association was formed recently.
