Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin 8k fun run

Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin GAA Club is running an 8km fun run and walk on Sunday February 15 at 12 noon. This year’s fun run will be called the Turlough 8km. There will also be an u10 children’s run starting at 11.30am. This year’s run is being organised in conjunction with Mayo Mental Health Association and The National Museum of Ireland. Registration will take place at Turlough House from 10am to 11am for the children’s race, and from 10.30am to 11.30 am for all other runners/walkers. The main race starts at Turlough House, goes towards Turlough Round Tower, on towards Parke village, takes a left just before Parke pitch, and continues on towards Shaw’s Garden Centre, to finish back at Turlough House. The course is mainly flat with a few slight hills.

Jimmyball fundraising fun day in Ballina

This family fun day out will remember Jimmy and Anne Moran and will take place tomorrow, February 7, from 1pm to 4pm in Scoil Padraig, Market Square, Ballina. The event will then move to Ballina Sports and Leisure Centre at 5.30pm, where there will be a legends basketball exhibition game. The event will wrap up in Ballina Rugby Club where there will be a celebration of music from 9pm. All donations and proceeds will go to Cancer Care West, Ballina Order of Malta, and Scoil Padraig, Ballina.

Clann Machua, Kiltimagh

Clann Machua Drama Group are busy rehearsing for their production of Conversations on a Homecoming, which they will present in the Town Hall Theatre in Kiltimagh from Thursday February 19 to Saturday February 21. This classic Tom Murphy play was written in 1985 and celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The drama is set in a pub in a small town in east Galway.

Mulherin’s office hit in arson attack

The constituency office of Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin on John Street in Ballina had a petrol bomb thrown through its front window on Tuesday just after 7pm. One unit of the Mayo County Fire Service attended the scene and brought the blaze under control and minimal damage was caused to the office, mostly as a result of smoke.

Holocaust survivor tells his story to Foxford students

The students of St Joseph’s Secondary School, Foxford, got a chilling lesson on the horrors of the Nazi regime yesterday (Thursday) when Irish based Holocaust survivor, Tomi Reichental, travelled to Mayo to share his experiences as a boy in the notorious concentration camp Bergen-Belson.

Survivors of child sexual abuse seek support at SHARE

A Castlebar based support group dedicated to adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse says that it has seen an increase in the number of people contacting it for support.

Nick Groom, founder and chairperson of the group SHARE, said he believes the increase is due to the recent media coverage of cases of sexual abuse, such as the case involving Fiona Doyle.
