This new publication, which is a study of Ballintubber families based on the 1911 census, has been two years in the making. A huge volume of research and ‘digging’ was involved. The committee started by interviewing six of the oldest members of the parish, who are specially acknowledged in the book in portrait form. From this starting point it was possible to piece families together from the publicly available records of births, deaths and marriages, and from the census of 1901 and 1911.

Knock Shrine and Ireland West Airport were delighted today (Friday, July 15), to welcome the arrival of the first Diocesan pilgrimage from the Archdiocese of Boston with Aer Lingus. This represented a historic development for the airport and the region, as this is the first transatlantic service operated by Aer Lingus, from Boston, to Ireland West Airport and the first official chartered pilgrimage from Boston to Ireland’s National Marian Shrine.

The preliminary results for the 2016 Census, published by the CSO yesterday, show that Mayo has seen a slight population decline over the past five years. When the previous Census was carried out in 2011, the population of the county was 130,638; according to the initial findings of the latest Census, which was carried out on Sunday April 24, the population of the county had fallen to 130,425, a drop of 213.

Mayo Sinn Féin Senator Rose Conway-Walsh says she is deeply concerned about the burning of her poster on a Loyalist bonfire in Belfast on the eve of July 12 after photographs appeared on social media earlier this week of her election poster being burned along with the tricolour.

The hardest years for the industry were between 2007-2012 when some 950 pubs closed throughout Ireland. Even at its lowest point the industry was still providing over €2 billion in quietly received VAT and excise receipts to the State.

The opening of an Educate Together school in Castlebar this September moved a step closer this week, when the elected members of the Castlebar Municipal District agreed to a four year and nine month lease of Marsh House to the Department of Education and Skills.

Independent councillor Frank Durcan this week disagreed with the rationale for setting up an Educate Together school in Castlebar. At the July meeting of the Castlebar Municipal District, the elected members approved the lease of Marsh House in the town to the Department of Education and Skills for a four year and nine month term for the provision of a new Educate Together school.

The commercial vacancy rate in Mayo in quarter two of 2016 was 14.5 per cent, which is above the national average of 13.1 per cent. Commercial vacancy rates in Ireland have increased, from 12.6 per cent in quarter two of 2015 to 13.1 per cent in quarter two of 2016 according to new research published by GeoDirectory this week. A total of 28,615 of the 219,176 commercial address points in Ireland were vacant.
