Road Safety Road Show returns to educate young drivers

The hard hitting road show, which educates teens about the terrible consequences of road carnage is returning to Mayo in February. Transition year students from 29 secondary schools and Youthreach centres across the county will attended the AXA/Mayo Safety Roadshow at The Breaffy House conference centre, Castlebar.

€10.5 million collected in LPT in Mayo

Last week the Revenue Commissioners released the compliance and financial returns for the local property tax (LPT) for 2016, the headline figure for Mayo was that €10.5 million was paid in the LPT in the county. That figure represents a compliance rate of 95.9 per cent in Mayo. Nationally the compliance rate was around 97 per cent.

Make Mayo whole again says O'Brien

Fine Gael councillor Patsy O'Brien is encouraging people and community groups in south Mayo to make submissions to the Constituency Commission by next Tuesday to try to get the portion of the south of the county that was bundled in with Galway West for general elections brought back into Mayo for future elections.

Two workplace fatalities in Mayo last year

There were 44 people killed in workplaces in 2016 across the country representing a 21 per cent reduction of the 56 reported in 2015, according to figures released by the Health and Safety Authority this week. In Mayo there were two people killed in workplaces according to the report, both in the agricultural sector.

More than €1 million in ICT infrastructure grants for Mayo primary and post-primary schools available

Earlier this week An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, confirmed that €1,047,797 was available to schools in Mayo to develop their information and communications technology capabilities. The Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, recently made the announcement that his Department would invest €30 million in ICT infrastructure for primary and post-primary schools nationwide.

Mayo records higher temperatures and lower rainfall last year

Mayo saw higher mean temperatures and lower total rainfall in 2016 compared to 2015 according to the records from Met Eireann's four weather stations in the county. The warmest mean monthly temperature recorded in the county was in Newport in August at 15.5 degrees, with the Claremorris station recording a monthly mean high temperature of 15.1 degrees in August also, while in the same month Knock Airport recorded a monthly mean year high of 14.4 degrees with Belmullet's station recording its monthly mean high for the year of 14.6 degrees in June.

Mayo TDs and the Treaty debates

This January 7 marks the 95th anniversary of one of the most influential votes to have been taken by Dáil Éireann. The result of the Anglo-Irish Treaty vote continues to shape Ireland’s relationship with Britain and her place within the family of European and global nations to this day, as it does the domestic politics on this island. The Treaty was an agreement between the government of the United Kingdom and representatives of the Irish Republic, signed on December 6 1921, which brought the War of Independence to an end.

Ballina's Conncullin Irish Gin released

The Connacht Whiskey Company, based in Ballina, has released its first Irish gin called Conncullin. Master distiller, Robert Cassell, who has won numerous international gold medals for his prior gins, has enjoyed working with several botanicals iconic to Ireland, such as elderberry flower and hawthorn berry.

IWAK staff raise over €30K for three Irish charities

Ireland West Airport staff were delighted last week to present a cheque for €30,550 to the airport's three nominated charities for 2016 — Cancer Care West, MS Ireland, and Pieta House. In late 2015, in an initiative by the airport, Ireland West Airport staff voted to select three Irish charities for the inaugural Ireland West Airport Charity of The Year programme for 2016.

Mindspace Mayo launches outreach service in Ballina

Mindspace Mayo have recently opened its second outreach service located in Ballina in order to facilitate and support young people in this area. It can be particularly difficult for young people in more rural areas of the county to find and attend support services when they feel distressed. These young people face major barriers that prevent them from attending services such as lack of transport, geographical distance, sense of isolation, and confidentiality.

Operation Transformation walks taking place countywide tomorrow

If you are looking to get more active in 2017 and need some support, RTE's Operation Transformation is once again joining forces locally with Mayo Sports Partnership to encourage people to become more physically active in 2017. A number of walks will take place across the country tomorrow January 7 with Mayo walks taking place in Ballina, Ballyhaunis, Belmullet, Castlebar, Claremorris, Kiltimagh, and Westport.
