Woman sent forward for trial after €150,000 drugs find

A Chinese woman, who was presented with a book of evidence at Ballina District Court on Tuesday, has been sent forward for trial to Castlebar Circuit Court in April on four counts for possession and the unlawful sale or supply of €150,000 worth of drugs, which were detected in the Crossmolina area in November 2008.

McGuinness clarifies point on Traveller accommodation

Fine Gael Councillor Paddy McGuinness took some time at the monthly meeting of the Castlebar Electoral Area meeting to clarify his position in relation to Traveller accommodation in private camp sites. Cllr McGuinness told the meeting, “At a meeting here previously, I spoke about the transient sites for Travellers. I put forward a number of ideas on this issue, one of these I suggest to be looked into is that private camp sites may be opened up to the Travelling community who stay for short periods of time during the summer in and around the Knock festival and Reek Sunday. I wasn’t calling on these camp sites to be opened up, it was only one suggestion of a number that I made that day, which was synopsised in the press and some people took up as me calling for these sites to be opened up.”

Lorry driver seen doing doughnuts on the road

A man appeared before Ballina District Court this week after he was observed speeding and doing doughnuts on a road in Ballina.

Gardaí were notified on Sunday April 27 at 8pm that Gary Feeney, Lug Doon, Templeboy, Sligo, was speeding and dangerously overtaking in a silver Vauxhall car. The defendant was then observed doing doughnuts three or four times in the area between Ballina and the turn off for the rugby club on the Sligo Road. The defendant was approached by gardaí and was also detected driving with no insurance.

SPC welcomes river basin report

The members of the Mayo County Council Environment and Emergency SPC welcomed the publication of the draft report on the River Basin management for the western region at their meeting this week. The committee were given a presentation by Pat Canney, co-ordinator of the western river basin’s district office on the draft report compiled by his office which is currently out for public consultation.

Convicting illegal dumpers a priority of Mayo County Council

The issue of what happens once illegal dumping is reported to the council raised its head at this week’s monthly meeting of the Castlebar electoral area committee. Fine Gael Councillor Henry Kenny brought up the issue asking: “I have reported illegal dumping myself on a number of occasions, I’d just like to know what the follow up is on this dumping, do they come along and remove the materials that are dumped and what do they do after to investigate who is doing the dumping?” Cllr Kenny’s enquiry was backed up by Labour party Cllr Johnny Mee who told the meeting, “I agree with Cllr Kenny, there is an ongoing problem in this area where rubbish is just being dumped by people in the town. It’s a sad sight and it’s an appalling behaviour that has to be clamped down on by the council and the public in general.”

Jail for man who stole Pot Noodle, champagne, and Lynx

A Dublin heroin addict who is currently serving an 18-month sentence in the midlands prison was given a three-month sentence to run concurrently at Ballinrobe District Court last week.

The court, which was sitting in Castlebar, heard evidence from Garda Mark Crehan that Darragh Gaynor, 37 Pimlico, Dublin 8, entered Cummins’ supermarket in Ballinrobe on June 1 last and stole a bottle of Bacardi rum and a can of Lynx.
