New study helps Mayo seniors and their families communicate

Communication hurdles with ageing loved ones can best be overcome by following the new 40 to 70 Rule, according to a first-of-its-kind study by Home Instead Senior Care, Mayo’s leading in-home care provider. Analysis of the findings revealed that when the child reaches age 40 or the parent reaches age 70, whichever comes first, communication can become difficult.

Barrett calls for a Section 140 to complete Turlough Bridge

Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett has called on Mayo county councillors, and in particular the Fine Gael representatives, to use Section 140 of the Local Government Act to force the county manager to use an insurance windfall to complete the long awaited repairs on the bridge at Turlough, Castlebar. Cllr Barrett made his call after learning that councillors can force the council management to carry out these works under Section 140 once they can provide the money. And an insurance windfall of €160,000 which will be coming to the local authority from its insurers, the Irish Public Bodies (IPB), and which is not included in the annual budget, would fund the works according to the Labour councillor.

Proposal to halve number of Claremorris area meetings attracts strong opposition

Mayo County Council received strong opposition this week to a proposal to reduce the sittings of the Claremorris electoral area committee meetings from every month to bi-monthly. One local councillor even went so far as to accuse the council of snubbing the area.

Out of Ireland's 26 counties, Mayo ranks number 23 for burglaries, which accounts for one per cent of burglaries nationwide, according to the 2011 eircom PhoneWatch Burglary Report. The report also found that the most burglaries in Mayo take place in September.
