NUI Galway has a long tradition of excellence in sport and this has been enhanced by the recent success in rowing, hurling, basketball, soccer and rugby as well as numerous individual achievements. Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) and Institute of Technology, Sligo (IT Sligo) have formed a new strategic partnership, the Connacht-Ulster Alliance, with the aim of achieving Technological University status.
An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, TD, attended the formal signing of the agreement by the Chairs of the three Institutes’ Governing Bodies and their Presidents at GMIT Castlebar.

The Mayo County Council will hold a special meeting on Monday week, July 23, at 9.30am to discuss the adoption of the manager’s report on the Draft Ireland West Airport Knock Local Area Plan 2012-2018. The item had come up for consideration at the normal July monthly meeting of the council, but it was agreed by the members to hold a special meeting to discuss the plan thoroughly among the members.
