Mayo GAA fans line out for Ulster Bank event

The Ulster Bank GAA Force Roadshow travelled to Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club on Wednesday night, where some 250 Mayo GAA fans took part in the evening’s activities. The event featured a panel discussion and questions and answers session with RTÉ pundit and Kerry GAA legend Pat Spillane, former Mayo players Liam McHale and Martin Carney, and current Galway stars Joe Bergin and Finian Hanley. The event was MC’d by Newstalk sports commentator David McIntyre.

Castlebar pantomime 2012 junior and adult auditions

Castlebar pantomime committee invites anyone aged from eight to 18 years who is not in an exam class, to attend its junior chorus auditions for its January 2013 production. Due to time constraints, Castlebar pantomime cannot audition anyone who has not registered between 10.30am and 11am or accommodate anyone who has to leave early prior to their audition time being called.

Young men’s confidence affected by hair loss

The results of a national survey, conducted by DHI Hair Restoration about the level of hair loss experienced by Irish men, have highlighted that 51 per cent of young Connacht men (under 30) claim to be experiencing hair loss. The survey also revealed the extent of the psychological impact of male hair loss, with 24 per cent of those surveyed in Connacht claiming that their confidence is badly affected, particularly in social situations due to the issue.

The survey highlights that hair loss concerns a high proportion of Irish men at a relatively young age and a massive 71 per cent of those surveyed in Connacht are reluctant to talk about this issue with their peers. Interestingly an optimistic 90 per cent of Connacht men rely on their personality and claim it to be the most important factor in attracting members of the opposite sex.

Petworld hosting a fun charity walk in aid of local charities

Petworld is sponsoring a National Furry 5k Charity Walk, benefiting a number of local charities on Sunday September 16 from 10am to 12pm, at Petworld locations across Ireland. The Petworld Furry 5k Walk will be a fantastic, fun event, combined with the opportunity to help really worthwhile charities.

The free event will take place at five Petworld stores – Castlebar (Turlough), Athlone, Mullingar, Santry and Galway (Terryland) and will benefit five local charites: Athlone & West Midlands Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Western Care, Friends of Animals, Dogs Aid and Madra.

Sport and physical activity grants for older people

Go for Life has launched its annual grant scheme for older groups and clubs. Almost €300,000 has been allocated to this year's scheme, organised by Go for Life and the Irish Sports Council. Groups and clubs of older people all over the country can apply for grants to spend on equipment, to get an instructor in for a few sessions, or to organise a sports fest in their area. Typical amounts awarded are between €300 and €700 and the grants generally go to active retirement associations, senior citizens clubs, ICA guilds, day centres, and community centres.
