AA Ireland reports that the average national fixed fee for a fire brigade call out is €276 per hour for domestic chimney fires, and €414 for all other types of domestic fires, however Mayo’s fixed charge for a call out to a domestic fire stands at one of the highest in the country as the charge is €750 per hour. A a call out for chimney fire in Mayo is lower than the average rate though and stands at €150.

Fast food chain McDonald's is to create 700 new jobs in Ireland over the next three years in a €20 million investment. Ballina has been selected as one location for one of 12 new restaurants to be opened throughout the country.

Mayo County Council this week issued an apology to the large number of people in the county who received a reminder to pay the household charge, despite having already paid the charge. A statement issued by Mayo County Council said, “Mayo County Council on its own behalf and on behalf of the bureau (Household Charge Bureau) wish to take this opportunity of apologising to these householders for any inconvenience caused.”

Fine Gael Councillor Noreen Heston has urged small local businesses that have been refused credit by the banks to apply to the Government’s new Microfinance Scheme. The €90 million scheme has been available to businesses since the beginning of October. “This new scheme will be of huge benefit to small businesses in Mayo which have been refused traditional sources of finance. Any business or sole trader employing up to 10 people who have been refused by the banks for loans of up to €25,000 can apply. Over the 10-year lifetime of the scheme it is expected that over €90 million will be provided to 5,500 small businesses with the creation of up to 7,700 jobs,” Councillor Heston explained.

The Adult Refugee Programme, which runs nationwide, including Mayo, is to be closed after Christmas as part of a massive culling of social inclusion services. The programme, which is open to all those with refugee status was to assist as best possible in a process of integration into Irish society.
