The SMA Know-How maternity and infant awards 2012 took place on Friday November 16 at the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin, with Ballyglass Community Childcare Centre from Mayo picking up the Best Community Crèche Award. The awards celebrate inspiring individuals who have touched the lives of those around them, and recognise the leading maternity products and services as voted for by the public.

Ballina town councillors have asked that the town council give three hours free parking in the town each day in the lead up to Christmas. Independent councillor Mary Kelly, proposed that the council give free parking from 10am to 1pm every day from December 8 until Christmas to give a boost to the retailers in the town centre. She told the meeting: “They are the rate payers in the town and they need our support in the lead up to Christmas.”

Award winning country singer James Kilbane will be one of the artist taking part in the Celebration of Faith in Song and Music at The Church of the Assumption, Dookinella, Achill, on Thursday November 29 at 8pm.
The event will be led by Fr Tom Kearney SMA and the evening will include traditional pieces by renowned musician Diarmuid Geilty and friends, and a presentation by James Kilbane and his popular country gospel music.

Up to 2,000 students from across Mayo are still waiting for their grant applications to be processed by the new centralised student grant system, SUSI, which was set up this year by Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn TD. As many as 50,000 students nationwide are still waiting for their grants, which is resulting in students being forced to drop out of college because they cannot afford to pay rent or fees.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin will finish his two days of engagements in Mayo today, but yesterday as part of his visit to Castlebar, he spent over an hour in the Sacred Heart Hospital meeting with staff and patients and he called for action to be taken very quickly to ensure the hospital remains and is improved. Speaking to the press afterwards he said: “Firstly I was very impressed with the presentation I was given by the staff there. I was very impressed with the facility, particularly the rehab facility that was there. I think your fortunate to have a facility like the Sacred Heart that has a lot of potential”
