Coláiste Néifinn is an Irish summer college in Castlebar that caters for the learning of the Irish language for 12 to 18 year olds. This college is bringing to life our native language in a new and innovative way. The co-ordinators are two local Irish teachers, and they will be assisted by a range of experienced teachers. All the teachers have taught in several Gaeltacht colleges and bring a plethora of knowledge and hands on experience to Coláiste Néifinn.

The members of the Ballina Electoral Area Committee will meet next week to work out the road works plan for the area with senior engineers from Mayo County Council. At Wednesday’s monthly meeting of the committee the idea was mooted that the individual councillors would not take up the potential €7,000 that can be allocated to Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) works on private roads and they would put the money back into public road works budget.

The Swinford Electoral Area Committee this week gave initial approval for Mayo County Council to give a half-acre site to the Foxford Alzheimer’s Day Care Centre on a 99-year lease for a nominal fee. The patch of land is located on Admiral Browne Road, Foxford beside a portion of land that the council has already given for the construction of a medical centre in the future.

A major part of the photography business in Castlebar is seriously under threat following the implementation of a new Government measure into the way photos for driving licences are to be captured. The Government has introduced a new credit card style driving licence and sought a service provider to fulfil this brief through EU Tender process. SGS has been awarded the tender which includes the capture of each individual’s photograph for his/her driving licence on-site at one of SGS’s locations to be set up around Ireland by September 2013.

Mayo County Council officials gave an undertaking to ensure that all playgrounds in the county are suitable for children with special needs. Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway Walsh put forward a motion at this month’s meeting of the council calling on the body to “make certain the provision of new equipment and the adaptation of existing playgrounds, so that children with disabilities are not discriminated against in the county.”
