Last week the Castlebar branch of the Fine Gael party met to pick candidates to go forward for the selection convention ahead of next year’s local elections. The Castlebar branch selected sitting county councillors Cyril Burke and Eugene McCormack along with current Castlebar Town Council councillors Brendan Heneghan and Ger Deere. The four selected nominees all spoke to the meeting and will now go forward to the party’s Mayo convention next month.

Mayo Fine Gael TDs John O’Mahony and Michelle Mulherin have welcomed the announcement by the Department of Health that the number of patients waiting on trolleys at Mayo General Hospital has fallen by 15 per cent in the first nine months of this year as compared to 2012, evidence of the commitment by staff at the hospital in ensuring that patients always come first.

The members of Ballina Town Council passed a motion on Wednesday night calling for the revenues raised in the town from rates and parking charges and other levies usually imposed by the town council to be spent in the town following the abolition of the council next year.

Moy Valley Resources has won a tender competition for a three month contract valued at €10,000 (including VAT) to prepare a marketing and promotions plan for Ballina. The members of Ballina Town Council were informed of the news at the October monthly meeting of the authority this week, by town manager Paddy Mahon. There was some surprise among a number of councillors who had assumed that the council would appoint an individual to the post using funding they had set aside in their budget for this year.

Ballina is moving closer to following the lead of the likes of Ennis and areas in Dublin city centre in attaining a purple flag award, which is an international award that recognises the excellence in managing town centres with a focus on the night-time economy. A briefing was held between Ballina Town Council and a number of traders earlier this week, with a follow up presentation by a member of the purple flag accreditation body to take place next week, before a number of delegates from the town will attend a conference in Ennis on the purple flag the following weekend.
