A Claremorris man who was sent forward for trial to the circuit criminal court on criminal damage and theft charges was remanded in custody until the trial this week. Tomas Kuksta was served with the book of evidence against him before the sitting of Castlebar District Court on Tuesday morning last.
Kuksta was charged with one count of criminal damage and another count under the theft and fraud act at Mount Saint Michael Secondary School, Claremorris, between February 26 2013 and February 27 2013.

Labour Party Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett has this week responded to an article in last week’s edition of the Mayo Advertiser, where Fine Gael councillor Brendan Heneghan accused Cllr Barrett of using negative tactics in the debate about unemployment and job creation in the town.

John Sheahan, the Sinn Féin candidate in the Ballina Electoral area, has called for Swinford Courthouse to be handed over to the community following its closure in late 2013. Mr Sheehan said: "It was a sad day for the people of Swinford and surrounding areas when Swinford Courthouse held its last sitting in November 2013. The closure marked the end of an era as the service dated back to the middle of the 19th century. The loss of the court service means people now have to travel to Ballina for court sittings and has cost local business up to €250,000 in revenue annually. This closure could result in more job losses that Swinford can ill afford.”

Castlebar Electoral Area candidate, Lisa Chambers, has demanded increased support for working families to help them to deal with spiralling childcare costs. The 2011 General Election candidate said: “Unless the issue of childcare costs is addressed, particularly for lower income families, we will see a much greater number of children being cared for through private arrangements. But private childcare is totally unregulated, with no qualifications needed, no inspections, and no specific standards required. We need to ensure that crèches and pre-schools, which are regulated, are affordable options for more families.”

Coláiste Cholumba is located in An Cheathrú Rua in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht and provides a base for students to further their appreciation and knowledge of not only the Irish language but also of Ireland’s rich historical culture. Courses are graded and cater for primary students, pre-Junior Cert, and pre-Leaving Cert, with special tuition on oral examinations.
