Outpouring of sympathy following death of legendary actor Mick Lally

There was widespread outpourings of sympathy this week following the death on Tuesday of Tourmakeady native Mick Lally. Lally, who was 64, died in hospital in Dublin on Tuesday following a short illness. His funeral service took place in Newlands Cross crematorium chapel at 2pm yesterday, Thursday. He is survived by his wife Peggy and three children, Saileog, Darach, and Maghnus.

The controversial N59 project which includes a bypass of Crossmolina looks like it will remain in limbo for some time to come. At the February meeting of the Ballina Electoral Area, the elected members agreed a route for the N59 from Ballina to Crossmolina and further on to the west of the county. However the route was not approved when it came to a full meeting of Mayo County Council, following a large volume of opposition from people in Crossmolina because it would bypass the town. By not approving the proposed route at the full council meeting, the members have sterilised the land around original five proposed routes which were put before the members. However even if they do this, it will still leave the project and the lands effected by this in limbo.

The long running saga of the N26 linking Ballina to the N5 and beyond is set to run on for at least another year before a new preferred route for the road emerges. The item was up for discussion at the September meeting of the Ballina Electoral Area Committee this week where Tony McNulty, road design senior executive engineer with Mayo County Council, answered a number of questions from the elected councillors in the area.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has told the HSE that beds in hospitals in Mayo will be closed due to the release by the HSE of 376 pre-registration student nurses from the west region this week. Replacement qualified nurses have not replaced the student nurses, which means that without this replacement, beds and services will close.
