Barrett wants savings on bridge tenders

Labour Party Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett has expressed concern about the money to be spent on the erection of a pedestrian bridge at Lough Lannagh. It is believed that the lowest price quoted for the bridge is €630,000. Cllr Barrett is demanding that contractors be asked to give a discount on tendered prices, and that any money saved be given to repairing footpaths on the Turlough Road.

Planning permission can be extended

Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony, is calling on Mayo County Council to contact all planning applicants whose planning permission is due to expire within the next six months. Deputy O’Mahony said he believed the authority should do this as a once off gesture to people who may not be aware that for a cost of €62 applicants may get an extension to their planning permission for up to five years.

Castlebar gardaí launch positive ageing initiative

An Garda Síochána in Castlebar this week launched a “Positive Ageing’ programme designed to help keep older people safe in the locality. Members of the community in the town were invited to attend for a ‘Meet and greet’ at Castlebar Garda Station where they were hosted by Sgt Tony Cosgrove and Inspector Willie Keaveney who outlined simple preventative measures that can be undertaken to ensure their safety.

Council gearing up for winter weather

Mayo County Council is gearing up to face potential disruption on the roads across the county in the coming months. At the roads and transportation strategic policy committee meeting this week in Belmullet, the local authority laid out its plan of action for the coming winter months. The cold snap that ground parts of the country to a halt last year cost Mayo County Council €1.8 million in total to deal with, the majority of the money going on the national primary and secondary road network.
