Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway-Walsh has described Fine Gael’s plan to reduce the number of workers in the public service by 30,000 as “a plan to lengthen the dole queues”. She also challenged the Labour Party to state if it would go along with such a plan.

Second mobile screening location for BreastCheck in Mayo in 2011

Since BreastCheck returned to Co Mayo in June 2010 the service has provided free breast screening to approximately 2,500 women living in Castlebar, Westport and surrounding areas from the mobile unit located in the grounds of Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar. This represents a 79 per cent uptake rate of invitations to screening, well in excess of the BreastCheck target uptake of 70 per cent. There will be a short break in screening in the county beginning 19 November. BreastCheck has a commitment to screen women aged 50-64 approximately every two years. The BreastCheck mobile screening unit will return to Castlebar in March 2011 to screen women living in Claremorris, Knock, Kilmaine, Ballyhaunis, Cloghermore and many other surrounding areas.

Suppliers to lose millions from plan to close Mayo General Hospital stores

A plan is in place to close down the stores department at Mayo General Hospital which employs 28 staff and has been recognised as an award winning and cost-saving centre of excellence, according to Dr Jerry Cowley, Labour party general election candidate for Mayo, who added that such a move will result in local suppliers losing millions in revenue and put patient care at risk.
