The completion of the final stages of the Student Support Bill in the Houses of Oireachtas this week means a change in the way Mayo student grants are applied for and processed, with a central grant body to assess and award grants, rather than Mayo County Council or Mayo VEC.

The RNLI lifeboats in Mayo rescued 22 people off the coast of the county last year. The lifeboats, which are based in stations in Achill and Ballyglass, were called into action on 18 different occasions in 2010. The Ballyglass lifeboat was by far the busier of the two, with 12 launches of the boat. Ten of the launches were of the all-weather lifeboat, while the inshore lifeboat had to be launched twice. The Ballyglass station rescued 21 people over the 12 months.

In an article in last week's Advertiser, because of a typographical error, it was stated that Aviva Health, Ballina, is the only authorised Aviva health office in this area. We would like to clarify that this is incorrect as there are several Aviva health offices in the Mayo area and that Aviva Health, Ballina, is just one of these. The new bridge between Achill island and the mainland failed on the last day of a guarantee from one of the contractors on the bridge, a meeting of the Belmullet electoral area committee was told this week. The bridge failed to close on November 19, 2010, and caused a large number of people to be held up for a number of hours.
