Come along and join in all the fun on this year’s Westport Heritage Day, Lá Oidhreachta Chathair na Mart, and take a look back in time on life in Ireland fadó. On Sunday August 7 from 12 noon to 5pm The Mall will come alive. Food and craft producers will be selling their wares and a mix of spinners, butter makers, wood turners, potters, a tin maker, basket makers, and jewellery makers will show how things were done generations before the iPod.

Westport councillors reject variations to town development plan

Westport area and town councillors have rejected a new core strategy as part of Westport’s development plan, even though the town manager Joe Beirne advised that they take on board variations to the town’s development and environs plan.

Senior planner Ian Douglas told the area and town council meetings, which were held last Thursday, that councillors had three options in relation to the manager’s report — they could accept the report as it was, they could make alterations to it, or they could refuse it and go back to the original development plan. Mr Douglas said that if the plan was rejected they would have to give planning reasons for the refusal and then the Minister would be informed and a ministerial direction would be made.

Nominate your ‘leading light’ in road safety

----With just a few weeks to go before the closing date, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) is reminding people nationwide to get their entries in for the 2011 Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards. The awards recognise the extraordinary and often un-sung contributions of people across Ireland to make roads safer. The closing date for entries is Friday September 16 and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Farmleigh House on Wednesday October 12. Information on the categories and how to nominate a ‘Leading Light’, as well as entry forms, are available at www.rsa.ie/leadinglights.

Corrib ‘rape tape’ was tampered with, Minister for Justice reveals
