Judge convicts driver in contested case

A 73-year-old man was given a two year driving ban for drink driving and fined €600 at Ballyhaunis District Court this week. Michael Casey, Glann, Kilkelly, had contested the charge in court but Judge Mary Devins found that the arresting garda had acted as he should have when stopping Casey.

This exciting trip to Argentina, followed by some tourist time in Brazil, was part of the successful Irish Women in Agriculture tours organised by Mary Carroll and Mary Flynn.

Operation Bicycle Light road safety initiative launched

Operation Bicycle Light is designed to improve safety in rural and urban areas and educate vulnerable road users in the need to be seen in order to be safe on Irish roads. Vulnerable road users include pedal cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists.

Inspector Barry Foley of An Garda Síochána Traffic Corps in Mayo Garda Division, supported by road safety officer for Mayo County Council Noel Gibbons, launched Operation Bicycle Light in Swinford. The operation will include checkpoints throughout Mayo with a focus on vulnerable road users. High visibility vests will be given out in an effort to reduce the level of fatal and serious injury traffic accidents.

Fair trade begins at home - farmers protest against supermarket power

Members of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) in Mayo turned out in force last Saturday to demonstrate against supermarket power and the impact it is having on farming businesses. Leaflets outlining the main concerns of farmers were distributed to consumers outside the Tesco store in Claremorris.

“All we are looking for is fair trade for Irish farmers,” said ICSA Mayo chairman Cathal O’Reilly. “Over 70 per cent of the grocery retail sector in Ireland is shared among just three companies and the power they wield in controlling the prices paid to farmers and other suppliers is huge.

Mayo County Council on lookout for new county manager

Mayo County Council will be searching for a new county manger following the announcement this week that Des Mahon will retire after almost 20 years in the role. The Roscommon native, who lives in Westport, has held the position of county manager since 1990 and seen numerous changes in his time in charge of the local authority.
