Subject to a satisfactory conclusion of the Department for Public Expenditure and Reform's Consultation and Independent Review, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform is to give statutory consent to a scheme that will allow the project team to bring the Crossmolina Flood Relief Scheme forward to Construction.

To mark World Curlew Day which fell on Wednesday of this week (April 21), the National Parks and Wildlife Service, which runs the Curlew Conservation Project, presented the local Curlew Action Group in Cong with a specially commissioned Curlew sculpture. The work by artist Richard Farren, was unveiled earlier this week by the group, alongside Cong Tidy Towns, in the historical grounds of Cong Abbey.

Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Loftus has called for a second Covid-19 vaccination centre in the county to be established in Ballina. Cllr Loftus raised the issue at the April meeting of the Ballina Municipal District, saying that it would speed up the whole process and that a town the size of Ballina, along with the north Mayo region, should have a centre. He asked for the council to write to the Department of Health to raise the matter. He was backed by his party colleague Cllr Annie May Reape and Fine Gael Cllr John O’Hara in this call.

The elected members of Ballina Municipal District have agreed that a new Biodiversity Plan for the town will be put on public display. The members were given a presentation on the plan by Deirdre Cunningham, heritage officer for Mayo County Council, at their April meeting.

Councillor Michael Loftus has asked for a joint policing forum to be set up for the Ballina Municipal District. He told the April meeting of the district that following on from a recent countywide Joint Policing Committee (JPC) meeting, he wanted to see a forum set up similar to that used to exist before the abolition of town councils, when Ballina Town Council had its own JPC - which then fed into a countywide JPC.
