Fine Gael Mayo TD John O’Mahony has welcomed the announcement of 6,000 new college places which are being made available to unemployed people, including previously self-employed people, who want to upskill, as part of the Springboard initiative.

Killala Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly welcomed the allocation of €112,500 to re-develop Kilcummin slipway in Carrowmore-Lacken. The allocation from the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine Simon Coveney will allow the construction of a new slipway and turning area, as well as the repair of the storm wall which collapsed over the winter.

Mayo County Council is turning to CCTV in a partnership to stamp out the scourge of boy racers doing doughnuts on public roads endangering their lives and the lives of others. The CCTV cameras are placed with signage at known locations where this behaviour is taking place and the video footage with the offenders on it is forwarded to the gardai, , according to Noel Gibbons road safety officer, who stated:
“Residents say that their lives have been turned into ‘a living nightmare’ by the young nuisance drivers racing, skidding, honking horns, flashing lights and blaring loud music. Local residents fear someone will be killed or injured unless they stop.

Two Tyrone Guthrie bursaries from Mayo County Council have been awarded to visual artists Mary Noonan and Will O’Kane. Every year Mayo County Council offers two bursary awards to artists born or living in Mayo, to enable them to spend two weeks at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig, County Monaghan. Each bursary covers all board and lodging expenses for a two-week period, plus the use of a studio if relevant.

The average rent nationwide in the first quarter of 2012 was largely unchanged from a year previously (down 0.1 per cent), standing at €812, according to the latest report published by Ireland’s property website, Daft.ie. However in Mayo, rents in early 2012 were 3.9 per cent lower than a year previously, with the average rent now at €557, a fall of 22 per cent from the peak. In Connacht overall rents fell by 1.5 per cent in the first three months of 2012.
