O’Mahony welcomes courts consultation process before any decisions

Kiltimagh restaurant ordered to close

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) stated that 12 closure orders and one prohibition order were served on food businesses during the month of July – making last month one of the highest in 10 years for enforcement orders issued. Closure orders were served under the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010 on New Jasmine House restaurant, Aiden Street, Kiltimagh, Mayo on July 17 2012. The order was lifted on July 20 2012.

Kenny launches go-kart pedalathon for Western Care

An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny launched the first go-kart pedalathon in the west of Ireland last Saturday, August 4. On Saturday September 29 a relay of Mayo celebrities, sports persons, politicians, and others will take part in the first pedal go-kart pedalathon to be held in the west of Ireland. The event involves a sponsored go-kart pedal between Swinford and Castlebar in aid of Western Care Association.

Shell protesters face public order charges

Two anti-Shell protesters were before the holiday sitting of Ballina District Court on Wednesday for public order charges arising out of alleged incidents that took place at Ballinaboy, Barnatra, Ballina, on August 1 —the location where a giant tunnel boring machine, which was on the way to the Corrib gas terminal, was struck at a crossroads.

Couple failed to pay loan for Mayo pub

A Roscommon couples home is to be repossessed after the High Court ruled on Thursday that IBRC can take possession of their home after they failed to make a single payment on an investment loan for a pub which they bought in Mayo.

The £69,000 loan taken out by Patrick and Patricia Raftery in 1992 from Irish Nationwide Building Society was used to buy The Hob in Charlestown. The family home was put up as security. However, not one payment was made on the loan. With interest they now owe over €262,000.

Manageable if you have a sparkling two litre car with air condition and comfortable suspension but what about a Vespa PX 125 scooter (max speed, 45mph)? Internet research will tell you that it has never been done before. This is a challenge that is going to be attempted by local Castlebar man, Ian Mc Dyer. In conjunction with McCarthy’s Bar, Main Street, Castlebar, Ian and his support team will make their attempt next weekend on Friday and Saturday, August 17 and 18.

Mayo winners at National Crafts Competition

The RDS has announced the prize-winners of the 2012 RDS National Crafts Competition. Maintaining an overall prize fund of €28,000, the competition saw a significant increase in entrants this year, revealing the continued surge in interest in craft and design. Together with the winners of the 20 categories and the special prizes sponsored by Irish Crafts Guilds and Associations, the prize-winning and highly commended works will be on show in the RDS Concert Hall today (Friday), from 10am to 5pm, offering the opportunity for the public to see the exhibition free of charge.

No seatbelt, no excuse

According to shocking new figures released by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), in the first six months of 2012, 23 per cent of drivers killed and 29 per cent of passengers killed were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. The information is based on preliminary data supplied by An Garda Síochána. A worrying feature is the number of people who were not wearing a seatbelt and who were ejected from the vehicle.
