The elected members of the Castlebar Electoral Area Committee have directed Mayo County Council to stop all funding to Nephin Valley group water scheme. The decision came after the Nephin Valley scheme sought a €900 contribution per house from another scheme, the Derrymartin Group Water Scheme, to which it has been connected. The new Derrymartin scheme had been installed and laid by Mayo County Council and all connections made, but the water has not been turned on by the Nephin Valley side who wanted a €900 per house contribution for the scheme.

The Mall in Castlebar is to have Christmas lights permanently installed on its trees over the next few years on a phased basis. Town manager Seamus Granahan presented a proposal to the members of Castlebar Town Council this week to have lights installed on the trees stretching from the corner where the Garda Station is located past the Court House towards the Motor Tax office. The cost of installing these lights, which will be kept on a permanent basis, will be a once off cost of €35,000, with maintenance costs going into the future.

Controversial Castlebar councillor Frank Durcan once again called the planning process in Mayo corrupt, at the September meeting of the Castlebar Electoral Area Committee.
Cllr Durcan had started speaking on the issue of a single planning application that had been withdrawn by applicants, before he hit out at the planning system in Mayo. The councillor told the meeting that he had nothing against the people involved in two other developments that had received planning permission in a similar location to the one he had brought up earlier, but he went on to say, “The planning here is nothing but corrupt. But if any official or person wants to take me to court [over his allegation], I’ve no problem in meeting them there”.

Mayo County Council won’t have to worry about dealing with a €2.57 million hole in their budget if the collection rate for the household charge reaches between 75 and 80 per cent. County manager Peter Hynes told a special meeting of the council this Monday that, going by all indications following discussions with the Department of the Environment and the Minister, the potentially ‘catastrophic’ cuts would be avoided if those collection rates were met.

A programme of events which will be taking place in the county during The Gathering Ireland 2013 will soon be drawn up for the county.
Padraig Philbin, county co-ordinator for The Gathering presented members of the Westport Electoral Area Committee with the main aims of the year long celebration, which will encourage as many of the Diaspora as possible to return to the country, with hosting headline events, local gatherings, and festivals to be held.
