Airport plan paves the way for employment and investment

A blueprint for the future development of Ireland West Airport Knock is to be approved by the members of Mayo County Council on Monday, following its adoption by the members of the Swinford electoral area committee this week.

Submissions were submitted to Mayo County Council by the Connaught Airport Development Association in relation to proposed material alterations to the draft plan 2012-2018.

Mayo transplant woman pays tribute to her donor in Run for a Life

Just nine months after her life changing kidney transplant, Regina Hennelly, from Manulla, Co Mayo, will pay tribute to her deceased donor by taking part in the Irish Kidney Association’s Run for a Life. Regina will participate in the charity fundraiser which promotes organ donation and will take place at Park West Business Park, Dublin 12, on Saturday, October 13 commencing 12 noon.

Mayo Roscommon Hospice thanks sincerely all the individuals, clubs, businesses, schools, etc, which hosted coffee mornings/evenings on their behalf on National Coffee Morning for Hospice. Grateful thanks to Bewleys which sponsored the coffee and all who supported the event so generously in each area. Special thanks to Midwest radio for its great efforts in organising the coffee morning in the Royal Theatre again this year, and to all the entertainers who gave their time free of charge to help make the day such a great success. Thanks to the generosity of the public the amount raised at the event came to the wonderful sum of €13,250. All funds raised will help the foundation to continue to provide palliative care services free of charge to those in need in the community. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Keelogues woman to run New York marathon for Mayo Rape Crisis Centre

Trish Reddington from Keelogues, Castlebar, will be running in the New York City Marathon, the biggest race in the world, on November 4 to raise funds for Mayo Rape Crisis Centre. Trish, a former Mayo county footballer took up running while living in New York City. A member of New York Road Runners Club until she moved home in October 2011, Trish only began running in 2008. She has since completed six half marathons and two Olympic size New York City triathlons in 2009 and 2010, where she helped raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of New York City.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny will be making a special delivery of high viz vests to junior infants in St Peter’s National School, Snugborough, Co Mayo, next Monday, October 8 at 9.15am.

This marks the first day of Irish Road Safety Week which is taking place from Monday October 8 to Sunday October 14. The high vis vests are being delivered to every child starting school this year as part of a Road Safety Authority (RSA) and Electric Ireland campaign.

Cross county boundaries at the Great Fjord Swim

With the numbers already exceeding all expectations, the inaugural Great Fjord Swim has really garnered great interest from experienced swimmers and newbies alike. Taking place for the first time in the beautiful harbour of Killary on October 13, competitors will experience the thrill of open water swimming in Ireland’s only fjord - this is sure to be a brilliant challenge for participants of all abilities from beginners to regular tri-athletes. And, there is €2,000 in cash prizes for competitors on the day.

There are two distances to choose from – two kilometres or 750 metres. The two kilometre event involves boarding the Connemara Lady which will bring you out to the middle of the fjord where you jump in and swim back to shore. With the 750 metre event you cross the fjord – start in Co Mayo and finish in Co Galway The 750 metre event is perfect for those who are only recent converts to the benefits of swimming while the two kilometre event is for those who like to regularly take the plunge, summer or winter.
