Ballina has been named the eighth cleanest town in Ireland in the latest Irish Business Against Litter survey, which deemed the town to be "cleaner than European norms."

Ballinglen Scotch Model Farm
In late 1850, the farmhouse on the Scotch Model Farm at Ballinglen, south of Ballycastle, burned to the ground. With it went the meal supply used to feed the boys at the school associated with the farm and the home of James Carlaw and his family. Was it an act of God, and if so, whose God? Or was it a deliberate intervention? A statement published by the sponsors of the farm in the Leinster Express in December 1850 put the fire down to an accident. Donations were sought to rebuild.
Barrett wants rapid action on District Hospitals

"We are now told that it will take three years for the first patients to be seen in the new extended Emergency Department in Mayo University Hospital. This is far too long and I am calling now on government TDs in this county to push for rapid action on equipping our District Hospitals to provide an alternative pathway to the Emergency Department," local election candidate, Harry Barrett, said this week.

On Monday last, June 19, following consultation with the Health Service Executive, Uisce Éireann and Mayo County Council issued a Boil Water Notice to protect the health of approximately 160 customers supplied by the Clare Island Public Water Supply. This follows the detection of cryptosporidium in the water supply.

Both Mayo County Council and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD have listed out a number of benefits for the county following on from the opening of the new N5 Turlough-Westport road, which was officially opened by the Taoiseach on Thursday, June 15, 2023.
The council stated: "The scheme will bring a range of benefits, including the reduction of traffic congestion in Castlebar and Westport, therefore improving road safety for vulnerable road users in those areas.

On 3 February 1842, Baptist missionaries Mr Clarke and Dr Prince boarded the Barque Mary at Bassipa, a new settlement established by London merchant Robert Jamieson on the island of Fernando Po, Equatorial Guinea. Their destination was Liverpool. The voyage was stalked by disaster from the outset. On 11 February, the main mast was struck by lightning in a storm, and a crew member was killed. On 25 March, the mast fell onto the deck bringing down sails and rigging, leaving the ship adrift at the mercy of the waves.
