Fine Gael TD for Mayo John O’Mahony has called for the introduction of a tracking system to help college students monitor the progress of their college grant application. Deputy O’Mahony made his suggestion in Dáil Eireann last week and also called on Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, to ensure that applications are processed as soon as possible.

The prestigious castle, which is set on 365 acres of land in Cong, was purchased in 2007 by Galway businessman Gerry Barrett for €50 million. Last year it was placed in receivership. The guide price for Ashford Castle according to Savills estate agents is €25 million.

AA Ireland reports that the average national fixed fee for a fire brigade call out is €276 per hour for domestic chimney fires, and €414 for all other types of domestic fires, however Mayo’s fixed charge for a call out to a domestic fire stands at one of the highest in the country as the charge is €750 per hour. A a call out for chimney fire in Mayo is lower than the average rate though and stands at €150.

Fast food chain McDonald's is to create 700 new jobs in Ireland over the next three years in a €20 million investment. Ballina has been selected as one location for one of 12 new restaurants to be opened throughout the country.

Mayo County Council this week issued an apology to the large number of people in the county who received a reminder to pay the household charge, despite having already paid the charge. A statement issued by Mayo County Council said, “Mayo County Council on its own behalf and on behalf of the bureau (Household Charge Bureau) wish to take this opportunity of apologising to these householders for any inconvenience caused.”
