Ruane appeals for CE scheme to be reinstated at Davitt Museum

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has expressed her disappointment that the Community Employment Scheme based at the Davitt Museum in Straide will cease today, Friday, November 30. She is appealing to the Davitt committee to reverse this decision to ensure that the museum can remain open and that the jobs of 21 workers can be saved and that the legacy of Michael Davitt be kept alive in the place of his birth.

Cllr Ruane said, “I have met with the workers over in the Davitt Museum over the past few weeks. The decision to discontinue the scheme came as an awful shock to workers when they received a letter from the Davitt committee on October 11 last.

Five hundred and eighty two applications received for housing grants this year

There were 582 applications received by Mayo County Council this year for grants for the mobility aid grant and housing adaptation grants and housing aid for the older people. Of those applications, the council has been able to approve all qualified applicants who had submitted their applications up till the end of June this year.

Last week Mrs Margaret Sekaggya, the UN special rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, met a delegation of 10 people to discuss the issues they face regarding the Corrib Gas Project. The delegation comprised seven members of Shell to Sea, Kilcommon parish priest Fr Michael Nallen, and two members of the human rights monitoring organisation Table Observers: Sr Majella McCarron and Donal Ó Mearáin.

Ballina burglaries double this year

Recycled batteries helping LauraLynn charity

The season of giving is just around the corner, and this year the people of Mayo can give to a charity and help the environment for free thanks to WEEE Ireland and LauraLynn, Ireland’s Children’s Hospice. Due to the success of last year’s inaugural Spread a Little Sunshine campaign, WEEE Ireland is teaming up with LauraLynn for a whole year to try to recycle as many waste batteries as possible while also creating a fund for the children’s charity.

Upstart - celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Mayo County Council Arts Service has been leading, supporting, and developing arts and disability programmes throughout the county and it initiated a support scheme through International Day of Persons with Disabilities three years ago. This scheme, now entitled Upstart, provides support for arts projects/events in Mayo, designed to provide a quality arts experience for people with disabilities in their own locality.
