Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has requested the assistance of the Western Development Commission (WDC) in drawing up a plan for the future development of Ireland West Airport Knock as an aviation hub for the region. After meeting with Deputy Mulherin, the WDC has agreed to investigate the opportunities and obstacles for the development of Knock so as to inform policy on transport connectivity for the region.

Mayo Fianna Fail representative, Lisa Chambers, has called on Taoiseach Enda Kenny to act immediately on this week's report setting out the future of the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar.

Ms Chambers said that the report, which calls for an investment of €10m to save the facility from closure in 2015, must be a priority for him and his Government. “Fianna Fáil welcomes these proposals which if implemented will guarantee the hospital's long term future as an 88 bed nursing home,” she said.

The Mayo Cancer Support Association, Castlebar, has been elected to the National Networking Committee of the Irish Cancer Society’s Cancer Support Affiliation Programme for the West/Northwest region. The committee, which held its inaugural meeting in the Irish Cancer Society’s offices in Dublin on December 6, will guide the direction of the society’s affiliation programme which sees it support 48 community based cancer support services across the country.

Man found with drugs in garda station

A man from Ballina was who was found in possession of €30 worth of drugs at Castlebar Garda Station was before Ballina District Court this week, where the court heard that since the adjournment for sentencing, that the defendant is still using drugs.
